Private Reg Transfers - Step by step

Convinced myself into buing a private reg for the car. I am buying it from a private seller who has it on retention.

I've never done this before - what should I know e.g. what paper should I get when I hand over the cash, how long does it take transfer???????? HELP!

Just doing this myself at the moment for the first time so I can only pass on my own experience. This applies to when the reg is already on a retention certificate (V778). The seller needs to send of the V778 back to DVLA with your name added as their nominee and a cheque for £25. In around 10 days DVLA return a new V778 to them with your name added. They give you this V778 with the section signed to say they agree to handing the reg over. You complete your current registration details on the same section and add your tax disc expiry date. If the transfer fee has already been paid then you don't include any payment. Post off the V778 together with you vehicle's V5 registration to your nearest DVLA Local Office (see their website for addresses) document and wait. In around 7-10 days you should get back a new V5 with your car registered under the new number (and I think a new tax disc?). You then put the new plates on your car ASAP and send back your old tax disc.

While breaking current radio silence/sulk (and avoiding saying anything that is suggestive, knob gaggy or toilet humour), I recently went through this process and your descrption sounds spot on from what i remember.

Can recommend the DVLA office in Chelmsford Essex, they were both helpful & fast (three cheers for the plucky people in DVLA Chelmsford)

One other bit of advice, If you don't get good response, try putting a bridle on them and giving them a good whack across the fetlocks with a riding crop.
