TV news reported brisk business around our retail emporia. Boxing day sales reportedly up 20% on last year.
Thanks to the ready availability of credit, people were out spending money they hadn't got on stuff they didn't need, which is supposedly good for the economy.
Funny old world isn't it?

I went this morning and was singularly most un-impressed with the stuff in the sales. I went because I need new clothes and there was pretty much nothing that appealed!
Usually the way which is why I don't bother, the bigger stores seem to bring out the stuff that they haven't been able to sell the rest of the year and then bring it out in the sales for a reduced price, then all of a sudden people want it.
We had a look at some of the 'sales' yesterday, very unimpressed, we didn't see any items that claimed to be half price, we seen blatant dodgy sales advertising, where a few weeks back, items were cheaper than they were at the 'sales', and had a silly RRP crossed out, making the dummies think they were having a deal, and the worst, we went into a large electrical retailer and was going to buy a digital camera for my dad, at half price, only to find, surprise surprise, they had none in stock, but tried (in vein) to direct us to the next model, with less features and £20 more.
Just ordered the same camera off Ebuyer for £15 cheaper than the alleged sale price of the non existent one in the shop!
The shops must think us all idiots!

). To be honest the only reason I went today was because the sales gave me an excuse / forced me - I think that clothes shopping is the worst thing you can possibly do!

About 2,000 people queued up at the Bluewater shopping mall in Kent from 0300, awaiting the opening of the Next store two hours later.
WTF ???
The Next sale is something else i have to admit. Used to go to it on opening day a few years ago and there were plenty of bargins. Not sure I'd queue though.

I really can't understand the Next sales. I mean, Next isn't exactly an expensive shop as it is. Why do some folk feel the need to queue for two hours at 3 in the morning for gods sake? More importantly, why are they even opening at 5am?!

We will be venturing to the new MK Ikea tommorrow- probably late as its open til 10- to avoid the queues, we need to order a glass cabinet and get a couple of rugs and a new chair for the new house, we have seen loads of stuff in nice furniture shops that costs a bomb, but Ikea is ideal if you are on a budget like us
Went into Next today- and walked straight out again, mainly due to the crap on sale, and long queues.

quite.. NEXT its everyday clothes...why would anyone queue to buy such stuff.
There are some strange people out there
now queueing to purchase a serious designer item maybe but NEXT....

my mates wife is an assistant manager in a NEXT shop, and she told me once that the NEXT sale is a bit of a con, and thatthey get loads of stock in of stuff they dont normally sell, just to fill the place up.
although it is quite funny to see a normally clean, tidy shop end up looking like Primark on a saturday!

The good stuff is taken off the shop floor. You can't even buy something you know they have if it's not in the 'sale' as it's taken out the back. I would rather wait and buy what I want once the scrummage is over.Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
