Hi all

I made the mistake letting my car run down its fuel yesterday on our way back from visiting family. Imagine my surprise when I was looking for some Optimax earlier today and couldn't find any. I was on vapour by the time I tracked some down. I recommend you all go and fill your boots whilst you can.

As has been posted elsewhere, Optimax is suffering as a result of the fire at Buncefield.

There has been no optimax in my locale for the last week or so. Tesco 99, BP ultimate and Esso 97 have been working fine on both cars though. Although in the manuals, modern Porsches are recommended to run on 98 RON fuel, running on 95/97 may lead to a barely noticale drop in perfomance but will not harm the engine.

There was a shortage of both super and cooking fuels.

Abridge Shell: no cooking or Optimax
Collier Row Shell: no cooking or Optimax
Collier Row Esso: no cooking or super

Very interesting article in EVO mag this month testing various octane fuels and measuring the Torque and BHP results with each, they compare Shell 95, BP 95, Optimax, Tesco 99, BP Ultimate and Sunoco race fuel which costs about £16.00 a gallon with some suprising results. Concluding that The age of the fuel was just as critical as the octane level.

Evo's article also pointed out the importance of knowing how each car's engine managment system adapts the running to different fuels. Eg not worth running high octane on a new E60 M5 as it adjusts downwards to mainitain the same output, whereas it was recommended for turbo charged cars.
