Yes heard that gem on BBC news this evening.

Extreme weather conditions= A light dusting of snow in London. All due to global warming, you naughty 4X4 drivers you.

Might have a hard time convincing people that snow is due to warming, didn't it always used to snow in december and then gradually stopped, obviously due to nasty global warming, but now maybe all that environmental bollox has paid off and its getting back to normal again thanks to nice non polluting new cars. Thats if you only consider the short term trends of the last 100years anyway.

Or maybe it's just the normal fairly unpredictable weather patterns that have been going on for a lot longer than that? .

like the fact that the River Thames froze over for a few Winters in Victorian times and it hasn't done that since?

It is my understanding (no doubt wrong) the reason why the River Thames froze back in those days is because the sides to the river were more shallow and the channels were not as deep or fast moving as it is today, for example the embankment now houses the sewage and tube line this would NOT have been present in pre victorian times and of course would be build during that time. Also the heat created by a large city raises the surrounding temprature by a few degrees (5?) than countryside areas.

The Thames froze regularly in the 15th and 16th Centuries. It was such a normal occurance that Ice Fayres were held literally "on" the river. That period is known as "The Mini-Ice Age". Since then, winters in the British Isles have been gradually getting milder with just the odd "cold blip" every 15 years or so.

I don't think any man made adjustments to the banks of the Thames would have a significant effect on whether the river freezes or not. After all, the river Neva freezes over in St Petersburg EVERY year even today.

Thats a good post and it begs 2 questions

When the weather changes again in say another 30 years time and proves beyond all doubt for anyone except perhaps those with NVQs or a degree in Posh and Becks Studies that Global warming was nonsense, what will they come up with next? See, Global Warming is brilliant, its drivel, its long term and cannot be measured with any degree of certainty, it relies on faith. Like most things that rely on faith they encourage the formation of a club. Once you have a club you can take over the world if you try hard enough.

Will there ever be a time when the primitives can live without faith. Clearly intelligent humans have thrown off the shackles of god bullshit, however some are still clinging to a couple of other god style faiths such as the market and global warming. When we they shed these ties?

Those natural cycles spoken of suggest a gradual but sporadic worsening of our winters starting about 2000 and continuing up to about 2030, then a gradual return to milder winters. There are indications that by 2030 we could be close to the mini ice age conditions also mentioned here (1650 - 1710) which arose due to a strong and protracted minimum in solar activity beginning a few years earlier and lasting for about 70 years, subsequently named the Maunder Minimum.
