Look on the bright side: every Thanksgiving (and it's always a long weekend, so today and Monday will be included), the Internet speeds up by a factor of A Lot.

I'm told by those in a position to know that A Lot is a big number.

Is that like x "where x is a positive integer, tending towards infinity"? As in "I will be drinking a lot of triple x tonight"

Thanks Giving brought us just half the trading volume, which is bad. On the other hand, it was a good day to celebrate the anual company Christmas party at which there was a huge consumption of XXX or similar . So, that was a good day...

Sorry...

Just came across this post. Thanksgiving did indeed fall on Thursday 28th. However, most service businesses give thier employees the Friday following it off with pay (I did - what a nice boss, eh? ) as the Friday following Thanksgiving (known as black Friday by the retailers because it takes them from "in the red" to "in the black") is the largest shopping day of the year over here because the Christmas buying season starts. Shops open up at about 6:00am and go until midnight in a lot of places. So, if you are feeling sorry for yourself, just be glad you are not in retail over here. You'd need a few just to cope!

Also, we don't get Boxing Day off - so it evens up!

Edited to say: here is the reason I was late answering... Finally!

Right, I'm not as drunk as you think (roll on tomorrow...)

One googol, which is 1 followed by
100 zeros, or ten dotrigintillion.

A googolplex is 1 followed by a googol zeros. There are not enough
elementary particles in the known universe to write down a googolplex.
(There are fewer than a trigintillion such particles, but we need to
make ten dotrigintillion one digits.)

But it also depends on whether you are using the U.S. or the British
system. In the U.S., octillion, nonillion, decillion, undecillion,
dodecillion, tredecillion, quattuordecillion, quindecillion,
sexdecillion, septendecillion, octodecillion, novemdecillion, take
you into the 21st period (10^60). I found vigintillion as the next
one (10^63) and the largest I could find was centillion (10^303).
I imagine there is something like milletillion (10^3003) as well
(1000 tillion). Centillion in our British system is
10^600 (but we have 'thousand million' instead of 'billion', etc).

By the way, the power of ten is also the number of places (or zeros)
following the lead digit.

After vigintillion come unvigintillion, dovigintillion, and so on.
After novemvigintillion comes trigintillion, which is followed by
untrigintillion through novemtrigintillion.

One googol = 10^100; this is ten dotrigintillion in America or ten
thousand sexdecillion in Britain.

Clear?

Edited to say hope the turkey was nice...

I know it's slightly bad form to dig up and old post, but I've just spotted this and the detailed mathematical info surely deserves a reply, so:

Crikey, Scruffy, I wasn't intending to drink quite that much!! 10^16 is ample, methinks.
