Slow day in the office between Christmas and New Year so started playing with the Porsche Car Builder. Have been admiring Cayman for a while but happy with 993 at the mo. Got to thinking though - Lets say you had a budget of £59,080 to spend on a new porsche, would you buy:

1) 911 Carrera with no optional extras, none, not even a rear windscreen wiper (Porsche Builder won't let you deselect leather and top tint screen) - £59,070

or

2) Cayman S with options upto the value of your budget - you can have fun picking your own but I got metallic, leather, 19" carrera classic alloys, auto dimming mirrors, PASM, Short Shifter, Sport Chrono, Adaptive Seats, Full Climate, heated seats, multi function wheel, Bose, PCM, Ceramic brakes and a fire extinguisher for £59,080

I know there are a myriad of second hand alternatives, this is just a bit of fun to see how deep the 911 vein runs. Would you sacrifice all the toys for the purity of the 911???

With buying a Porsche for being a Porsche, it's not easy to justify the optional extras. Metallic paint!?! Hello?!
911 then

Metallic paint, leather, Bose, PASM, Full Climate should be included as standard on the Cayman at it's basic price. Also, charging around £1500 for 19 inch wheels is a joke. In effect, when you take into account that the original 18 inchers are worth about the same (£1500), you're paying an extra £3000 just to have wheels included with the car since you don't get the standard wheels aswell!

The extra cost to Porsche for these is nearly zero, so a charge of £100-£150 for the wheel upgrade would be acceptable. This applies to ALL car manufactures with regards wheel upgrades at purchase time - complete rip-off!

Having just sold my 911 I'd say I'd take the Cayman, but If I'd never had the 996 I'd probably take the 997, well it's an Icon after all.
I wouldn't spec it to the tune of 60K though; you've just lost at least 10k soon as you drive the thing off the forecourt.

I'm not into this showing off business and bought the 911 for it's all round abilities, but when people asked me what car I drive I did like casually saying a 911, don't think it'll be quite the same saying a "Cayman"

I'm in stuck in the office today aswell bugger...

To blow £60k on a Cayman S specced to the gills is a bit silly as you'll lose a packet when you come to sell it. I'd wager trade in value in 3 years' time would be around £26k so that equates to £34k depreciation...

I was in two minds about whether to go for a lightly specced 997 or a Cayaman S a few months ago. I have opted for option C: used 996TT or mk GT3 for around £55k.
