I'm thinking of replacing my 2002 A4 Avant with a C-Class Auto Estate, probably around the same age. I believe they have more interior and boot space and also have a softer ride than the A4 which I find too hard around town.

It will be used mainly around town and probably no more than 8000 miles a year so I don't mind petrol or diesel.

Does anyone have any experience of these good or bad to share? It will probably be over 3 years old so I don't intend to use MB for servicing.

Go for a Silver Derv for resale value, Elegance has softer suspension then Avantgarde, Boots are nice and big, ask if the foot parking brake has been replaced as they fail for fun and I find the seats a bit poor.

On the C Class the suspension is the same on both Elegance and Avantgarde.

Dont worry about footbrakes - if its an auto just put it into park and forget the footbrake. However have noticed lots of turbo replacements on C270cdi, so 220cdi is a safer but boring bet. Get an avantgarde with standard wheels and suspension - if the car is on tyres wider than 205 it will have the sport suspension and ride like the Audi. They are not as bad as people make out - but try to get a diesel - petrols are loud, gutless and thirsty. Dont buy a petrol kompressor prior to late 2003 - for all of the above reasons.
