Jet forced into emergency landing
A transatlantic passenger jet has been forced to land at Cardiff International Airport due to smoke in the cockpit.
The British Airways 747, flying from New York's JFK airport to Heathrow, London, diverted to Cardiff at about 1230 GMT and made an emergency landing.
A Cardiff airport spokesman said fire crews were on standby but the plane landed safely. The cause of the problem in the cockpit is being investigated.
There were 17 crew members aboard the plane but just two passengers.

Bird strike
It was the second incident involving the plane in 24 hours.
Earlier, the aircraft had suffered a bird strike as it flew into New York.
This led to a six-hour delay for the plane at JFK airport.
Nearly all the passengers were put on other flights, leaving just two on board the jumbo jet when it was involved in the incident as it headed to the UK.
A Cardiff airport spokesman said: "It was reported that pilots had smelt smoke in the cockpit and the airport was put on full alert.
"The incident was dealt with by on-site engineers who discovered no fire and the passengers were sent onward to their final destinations by taxi." A BA spokeswoman added: "There was an indication that there was smoke at the rear of the aircraft. Our engineers are now checking the aircraft."

Apart from the emrgency landing bit, it sounds great. A whole 747 for two of you, and 8 cabin crew each.

I'd put up with the odd bit of smoke in the plane for an entire 747 and ~10 stewardesses to myself and a mate.

the best seat on any plane is 4 middle economy seats to yourself.
Seriously better than business and depending on the carrier First.

If they were economy passengers, I wonder if they still had to sit in economy class

I used to try to convince myself of that, but it just isn't true. Too narrow and too bumpy to get any proper sleep. BA Club beds are too narrow and too short (upgrades start this year). Virgin Upper Class and BA First beds are very good.

I fly business all the time but unless you are in a virgin UC it is still not as good as a full 4 seat spread.

The alternative is the full smorgasboard in business but then you wake with a hell hangover since it takes double the booze or twice the time to achieve the same state of sleep.

Remember it is always easier to sleep knowing you paid a fifth of what the guy in front did.

And that's from someone in the industry....
