...have you tried re-arranging the light units in the pod so that the clear reversing light is under the LED ring (with indicator) and the brake light is inside the reflector ring (fog light above)? To my mind, looks way neater although I expect some obscure construction and use reg will be breached.

no but replaced reflector ring with a second LED ring so have two sets of tail lights. Also was thinking of putting clear lenses in place of brake / reverse / indicator but not got round to it yet.

That would make sense, and it would reduce your chance of getting wiped out by a not-very-observant numpty while parked in a dark street...!

Correct they are a legal requirement, same as cats, etc but much easier to put in for MOT. The led rings are sort of mirror finished anyway so reflect light and the car is yellow so should be ok.
