70 litres or 60?

First off, Season greetings and I hope you all enjoyed (or still are enjoying) the holidays.

Daft question and possible problem here...

According to the VX brochure and Car Handbook, my 05 CV8 should have a 70 Litre fuel tank, but most refills have been on virtually empty tanks and the most I've managed to squeeze out of the fuel pump is 58 litres. This has been the same since I bought it from new. So, I'm guessing that the tank must be a 60 litre capacity?

But, today, the fuel guage and the fuel remaining showed empty and 20 miles to go. So, dutifully I made my way to my favourite hangout, the local Shell garage to fill up.

The fuel pump delivered just over 40litres and then cut out and subsquent attempts to trickle feed wouldn't work. I got back in the car, started it up and the fuel gauge showed 3/4 full and a range of 281 miles on the computer. Could this be a possible airlock somewhere in the filler pipe or a faulty fuel sender?

Anybody any ideas or come across this sort of problem? Any suggestions from my learned collegues on here would be appreciated!

Thanks

Paul

I get similar events on my VXR. Sometimes it costs me £55 to fill up, and other times it only takes £40 worth & won't take any more, and the gauge says 3/4 full?!

My VT2 doesn't suffer from the 3/4 tank issue but I do question the validity of the gauge. I fill up when the needle get's to 1/4 (DTE=100) and it takes approx 40-45 litres to get it full again. When full I either get 420 or 380 miles on the DTE. With a 75litre tank I'd expect closer to 1/2 tank.

You can use the onboard computer to tell you exactly how much is left in the tank (MODE + UP; then scroll through until you get to the fuel tank screen).

I found this on Just Commodores and this on CarGuides (just the bottom few paragraphs).

I'm not sure if any of the Monaro dealerships have the tools to re-calibrate the fuel gauge as the Just Commodore's thread suggests.

I'm happy to live with mine as it stands.

Thanks for the links - very interesting.

It reminds me of the faults the Ford Capri's used to have on the 6 pod dash set up's and and I used to spend hours sorting mine out. Sadly no computers to re-calibrate, had to strip out the dash to replace voltage regulators and scramble under the car to re-wire the fuel sender earth. Glad to see nothing changes when owning coupes.

I'll probably book it back into the dealership where I got it from and get them to take a look at it.

It's more of an annoying niggleand if I can get it sorted I'll be a happy bunny. Apart from that, it's by far and away the best car I've ever owned and long may it continue.

I've tried pressing Mode + Up, but it's doing nothing. Is there a particular knack of getting it to work?

On the VT-VX vehicles hold MODE+UP buttons down then start the engine. You'll hear a chime and the digital display on the dash will change. Use MODE to scroll through the screens. On the VY-VZ I believe it's MODE+SET.

You can get more info by just holding the MODE button whilst starting the car.

Yup, it's Mode + Set.

Pretty interesting to go through.

The analogue guage is in the red, the computer display is showing 2 gal remaining and the usual Low Fuel warning display/chime has just come on. So I'll get it down to the petrol station later and see how I go on.

Many thanks for your help.

Did you know that after the 'Low fuel' warning you get an 'Extra low fuel' warning ? I haven't been brave enough to get past that one yet.

Yes i've had that one come up! Engine completely cut out whilst cruising at 70mph, almost didn't make it home. A few bends in the road seemed to shake up enough fuel in the tank the engine ran and I got home, just!

The most fuel i have got into my 05 cv8 is 65 litres. The extra low fuel warning had come on and the range showed 5 miles. I would not like to go beyond this because fuel pick up may become a problem with less than 5 litres in the tank.

Do not worry about the fuel filler stopping early. i have come across this regularly in 20K miles. Some forecourt nozzles seam rather sensitive to back pressure and shut down at 3/4 full tank. Trying to top the tank up to full on these is a waste of time because no more fuel will go in, or so little as makes no difference. The next time you fill up at a different pump all will be okay and the tank will be full.

Well, I let the extra fuel low warning come on (the computers extra mode was showing 1 gallon)

Now for some wierd reason, when I had to park up on the pavement outside my house, the car was at quite an angle. Suddenly the fuel guage shot up to full, then settled back down to just into the red. The computer then showed up 2 gallons remaining!

So, I went to refill, and managed to get 58 litres in and the fuel guage showed Full rather than 3/4 as it has done on the last few fill ups.

I can only assume it must have been a glitch in the program that might have probably sorted it's self out!

Thanks for the suggestions. They've been really helpful.
