When driving the wifes 206 Pug, I get all sorts of agro on the street. No one lets me out at junctions, boy racers cut me up, white van man tends to bully me, school children mock me, and I have to grin and bear it.
However come the weekend, when the toys come out to play, (Cerbie or Fezza), things change. The reaction is completely different, women and children smile, go out of there way to be courteous, cars move over and let me pass, Max power boys even cheer and wave from under their baseball caps. There is this huge halo effect surrounding the car, and once again I feel respected.
It's as if other road users classify you according to the type of vehicle you drive. Is it just me or has anyone else had this experience.

Well, other road users effectively tend to humble down when they see me in their mirrors, but I doubt they would if I drove something in the likes of a Fiat Panda
IMHO it depends much on driving style; friend of mine behaves like a nutter when driving - regardless of being either at the wheel of his 944 cab or Pug 305 GT and other road users effectively let him pass anyhow.
As far as waves and smiles are concerned, I have never ever experienced the same as you and don't expect to; in France if you're less than 35 and drive something else than a 205 you're considered as a drug dealer...

On the whole I have found the slow (sub-90???) traffic on motorways very kind when you come up behind them. They generally move over. On a rural road I once had some guy almost pull over into a ditch he was so keen to pull over and let me pass and I wasnt even close behind him.
Mind you, there is no better feeling than when you have been stuck behind someone for a while at around 80-90, they finally decide to pull over. As they start to indicate you drop it into 4th and accelerate. By the time they are in the middle lane you are roaring past them at a fair rate of knots. Luverly

Oddly enough pimpled youths wearing baseball caps and driving pugs are the most aggravating driving up my backside. I try not to react(I have my NCB to think of) but what I do is to slow down waiting for them to thrash their four pot heaps past me (oh dear--I am evil!). Other pains ITA are in order: fast BMWs and the twee little Lotus's. They need more respect and the order of the day (within reason) is "thou shalt not pass"
clint888,
I find with the MP Boys they tend to 'swarm' all over the car, although they seem to respect a decent motor, they have a strange way of showing it. A quick stab on the loud pedal will dispatch them into my rear view.
Talking about Nuff Respect, I have just passed Linford in his Merc.
