Got a problem with my Rover gearbox (4.3 pre-cat).... synchromesh on second has gone.

Place where I get it serviced said not to worry and that I should be doubling the clutch any way to prevent rear wheel braking affect.

Now I'm a lazy driver and forget these things every now then and have the embarrasment of grating the 2nd gear on change down.

I can't find any indicative costs of rectifying this problem (gear linkage is cheap and chearfull...)

So any approx costs ????????? are we talking circa £500 less/more .... I've no idea.

Don't you just love these cars, had a list as long as my arm to sort out mainly cosmetics and all that hard earned wonger has been spent on other things

There are various places that will recondition gearboxes for you if you take it out yourself. Typically it will cost £300 - £500 although it will depend what state the old box is in. There are also plenty of TVR dealers and specialists around who will take care of the whole job for you if you don't fancy getting your hands dirty. Add about a day of labour if you take this route. It makes sense to replace the clutch (including release bearing and actuator fork) while you have it apart.

The line about double-declutching is twaddle. You should not normally need to double declutch. What you *should* always do is match revs on a down shift, but you don't need to double-declutch to do this. Nobody in their right mind would double declutch on every gear change in normal driving, that is what synchros are for.

However, while you are driving a knackered gearbox with weak synchros, you'll find it helps to slow the gear changes down and give the synchros more time to do their job, and if one of the synchros has totally failed you might want to double declutch in down changes to that gear to avoid grinding metal.

Cheers Pete..... and others.

Confirmed suspiscion on cost.

Second is totally shagged unless waiting for seems an eternity for them to engage, and I can't be doing with that

I'll give Competition Transmission Services @ Markyate a or Tower View in the New Year and see what they can do for me, I don't fancy getting my hands dirty.

Don’t want to be a messenger of doom but the poor syncro could be a hint at problems on the horizon in any case. Mine showed similar signs prior to may this year when is started making growling noises.

A recon is probably your safest option after going to the trouble of taking it out. I had an exchange gearbox for mine which cost £350 with 12months warranty.

I fitted it myself, which could have been a weekend job to be honest but once the engine and box was out I repainted the chassis and replaced the heat shield too.

If you haven’t got the space or equipment then I’d take it to a garage that can sort it for you because there is no way I was going to drop the box out from underneath with out a ramp and gearbox stand because is weights about 50-60KG. Try lifting that on your back grovelling round in the crap.

Not exactly on your doorstep - only a quick wizz round the M25 - but I'd most definitely get in touch with Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead (half a mile from Junction 9)

You may want to check out these chaps: www.gearboxman.co.uk/ as they are in Hertfordshire. I haven't used their services, but they look like they might suit your need. I made a telephone enquiry a few months back about my own requirement, and they were very helpful, and quoted about £150 for basic strip and rebuild.

just wondering, is it possible to replace the rover gearbox with the later serp one from the Griff 500? or will it not go?

Bound to be possible.TVR built some with pre-serp engines and T5 boxes(in '94 i think). Its just a question of which parts you need,ie box, bellhousing, possibly a different prop, its possible theres some difference in gearstick location(so maybe other bits or work needed) also?
Worth adding that i wouldn't worry about which box in particular you have.I've heard pro's and cons for either type.ie the Rover is generally weak, and T5 has a 5th gear problem. In general theyre both fine, and i wouldn't get paranoid about either.

I've done it. You need the T5 bell housing prop and obviously the box.

It's not a straight forward swap, I had to fabricate special mountings for the box, the hand brake location is slightly different and so are a couple of chassis rails. Then there's the speedo drive to sort out and the reversing lights. All in all not worth the trouble in my opinion.

For the cost of the conversion including all the fiddly bits that need to be done, you can get the LT77 box rebuilt to a stronger spec about 4 times...
It doesn't make any sense at all to be honest...

well in my typical "I'll get round to fashion ", its taken over 2 years for me to get off my ass to this done.....

Hopefully next week it will be in Austecs (dependant on the work force not being sick) having a T5 box fitted (apparently its easier then made out on here).

I'll keep you posted

Should not need to double-declutch, just a heel & toe "blip" of the throttle on downshift. It certainly worked on "my" old 1967 Mini Cooper, on which I had destroyed the syncro on third gear (having read some rally books by Timo Makkinen & Paddy Hopkirk that said you could do clutchless shifts in a Mini, hence accelerate quicker). But my Mum (whose car it was) never got the hang of the downshift technique, so it was Doghouse City for me....
