Oil & water mixing.

OUCH,......
Yep, decided to have my new CD player fitted, but on returning home the car overheated. It was only showing 90 on the temp guage though, so I presumed I'd managed to get an air lock in there.
I went to get some antifreeze from the shed & on opening the expansion tank, I was greeted with that joyfull scene of oil sitting on top of the water. A quick look at the dipstick & there it was.... a gunk like liquid that was supposed to represent oil.
So, I'm presume a head gasket, a duff head or a cracked block.
Now I just know I'm going to take it for repair & they're going to say "that's alright Russ, we'll fix it for £50 & you'll be back on the road in the next couple of days".....Hang on, I'm waking up from the dream, oh bollox, this aint gonna be cheap.
I & havn't even had chance to play my triple Elvis CD that some one bought me

Sorry to hear about your car Russ, I really do hope it's the gasket. Look on the bright side tho, at least she'll be out of this crap weather while being tended to.

Why do you hope its the gasket. Its still an engine/part engine strip down isn't it?
Sorry to hear the bad news though Russ. Hope you get it sorted soon.
Dont despair Russell, what better news to start off 2006 than an excuse to have your engine internals checked over whilst the gaskets are replaced... (hopefully thats all it is and no other damage has infested itself).... might even be an opportunity to consider a 5 litre stroker upgrade for just a few more pennies 
Bit of an update, I've checked the car today & the oil & water seem to have cleaned themselves (Am I going mad ?)
Drove it to work & it started throwing steam out at 90C, long before the fans are due to kick in (100C).
I've turned the engine off & checked the oil, and it looks the right colour.
I've re started it & it's almost gone off the scale at 120C, so I'm thinking air lock.
The recovery company have done a test on the pressure cap on the expansion tank, ok, the rad, temp in is 84C, temp out is 54C so that's alright, bled the system, but it's still throwing steam out.
They also carried out a "cold test" on the head gaskets, which appeared o.k.,
It could just be the thermostat, but I could swear that oil had bits of water in it last week.
I'm hopeing that it's a gasket rather than a cracked block or head.
It's on it's way to Power, it's all Elvis's fault

She's back, new head gaskets, heads skimmed, timing chain, oil pump rebuild & a new rad.
Funnily enough, it's the first time it's been away & I havn't actually missed it. I'm not sure if I've "lost the bug" or if it was looking forward to the bill (price of a low mileage 2001 Megane that the missus was looking at :bloke gettingkickedinthebolloxbyhis missus/smiley: )
Perhaps a bit of trouble free motoring will win me over, but things have definately changed in the me & car relationship

If you do lots of short journeys you tend to get water in the oil type symptoms or mayonaissey looking oil. Many people confuse this with head gasket failure or unscrupulous garages certainly do.
If I'm perfectly honest, I suspect the gaskets were ok.
I've a feeling the "coincidental" new radiator was the cause of my problems.
