Yank oils!!

Well I'm coming up to engine and Trans oil changes. I'm happy that I know what to put in, but, there are a few astounding stories about some oils from over the pond.
Trailing through Pelican Porsche parts would suggest that Amsoil seems to be one of the top synth oils around in America. There are various sites to see what this oil is capable of doing. It appears that it out performs almost every oil, prolonging the life of your car.

Even the Tranny oils are safe for GL2 through to GL5 with none of the normal problems with yellow metals.

The thing is its now being advertised at some outlets (Demon Tweeks)

The claims for the gear oils outperform nearly everthing else, with better gear change for cold and near no wear for the gears after testsing.

So, anyone tried it yet.

the search is fast on the forums, and for my S2 I've got loads of interesting info. Also Try Clarks Garage for 944. Manuals and instructions on how to do everything !!!

Hi m8t don't know much about the oils(will have a look) but i'm in east anglia if there arn't any meets maybe we could sort one out happy motoring

There are lots of nice places in east anglia for a meet!

Any more suggestions for a venue would be welcome.
We'll wait for an inprovement in the weather for now though.
(I've not had mine very long either Paul, 944S2 Cab.)

hi as oils go most are good .if you add slick 50 that should give you longer life etc and you only need put it in with every 4 to 5 oil changes.i have used it . I use forte now just because that is what I stock in my stores and it seems to be ok

There was a long thread on the subject of oils last year. Among them a recommendation to avoid slick 50! /www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=124186 The advice is from an oil specialist, and worth a look. Hope the link helps!!

Shame he didn't mention gear oils !

All this GL4 and GL5, concerning yellow metals is interesting.
The Amsoil product appears to cover right through the grades and not effect the yellow metals of 944 gearbox's (S2 in my case)

Slick 50 is snake oil. Don;t waste your money.

Favourite gearbox oils... For the box itself, Castrol Syntrax. For the diffs, Silkolene BOA90LS.

And please, never ever, ever put stuff like Slick 50 or other additives into an engine or gearbox. The best additives do nothing, the worst will corrode copper main bearings or brass alloy synchro rings.

If your Porsche is under factory warranty, only ever use what they recommend, even if there are better (unapproved) oils available.

There's also opieoilman on PH who is an expert on engine lubricants, may be worth chiming in on his perpetual 'best oils' thread in the Engines forum. He sells the stuff so may be somewhat biased, but appears to be fairly genuine re: recommendations based on good engineering rather than just marketing his own products.

Main wisdom I've picked up from that long thread appears to be that even though high ester content (and therefore expensive) oils are the best synthetics, it's essential to match the viscosity / heat characteristics to the specific engine. I was told by an OPC that my 993 must be run on synthetic 0w40 (e.g. the normal Mobil 1) but it's so thin the engine burns it like buggery and the car feels a lot happier on 15w50 Mobil 1 motorsport.

There's a lot of marketing B.S. around what can and can't be labelled 'synthetic' as well so it sounds like a bit of a minefield.

I haven't bought my oil from Opie as I can easily pick up Mobil 1 motorsport locally, but have found his advice very useful. He's probably got the datasheets on the Amsoil products so will be able to make an engineer's judgement.
