I was wondering the same thing a few days ago. On mine it looks as though the interior of the glovebox lid was stuck on last; so maybe the front trim panel has captive studs that go through the lid, with nuts on from the back, then the interior is glued on to hide the nuts...?

Having just had mine done, i can tell you that if you remove the back piece of leather that is glued on, you will find three nuts that hold the metal plate on that the veneer is stuck to, and they had glued mine on too. I could'nt get mine off so i sent the whole thing off. was no problem.

My '87 350i has NO metal plate to which the glovebox veneer is stuck to - it is stuck straight on to wood. There are others with this setup - careful peeling back layers of veneer to find the metal plate as there might not be one!
