Seats are in good condition but drivers side has more wear than passenger side.
Can the recliner mechanism be changed - allowing them to be switched. ?

You don't have to, the seats will fit on either side with the adjuster on the inside or outside it dosent matter. I changed mine over but the black plastic plate thingy will need adjusting to fit the side nearest the doors to cover the non existent adjuster.

It is interesting to have a look at the amount of other cars which have the adjusters inside, indicating that people have done the same thing as you are intending.

Another advantage to doing this is that the adjuster will no longer have intimate contact with your prostrate if you get into the car wrong....
