Ford hoses on a 400

There are three coolant hoses on my 400 which have the same Ford part no. on them - the two which go through the bulkhead and connect to the heater, and one which T's into one of those and then joins to one of the steel pipes running under the manifold. They've got a 90 deg. elbow at one end, and are getting a bit tired so I'm looking at replacement. Any ideas which Ford they may be from, or whether they're even still available?

Replace them with any of the shelve water hose, just measure the diameter, or go one better and buy some proper samco type stuff to make it look better and last longer

Don't forget to get new clips as well

Hi Paul, yes I would prefer to replace them with silicon versions, but the pre-formed elbows on the Samco versions are not long enough, unless I start adding more joints. I always use Hi-Grip clips as well.

The Ford part number identifies the vehicle and year of introduction eg. 77GG xxxx could be Transit, 77-on.
Try a Ford parts place...

They start with 72EG... so I guess I'm looking at something pretty ancient - will try the Blue Oval tomorrow.

Well the Cortina (3 or 4?) looks like being BB, since some of the suspension bushes start with that... IIRC the really long hose on my car that links the heater matrix to the rigid pipe under the plenum was ex-Transit - 72EG18686AA. The last bit can change if there was a modified part introduced (AA, AB, AC etc.).

I don't remember any elbows on mine when I replaced the lot on the 350 or 400, but maybe I just used straigt pipe and got round the elbows ? Certainly no kinks anywhere

If anyones interested, these 3 hoses are from a mk. 1 Capri ('72). Unsurprisingly, according to the Capri parts specialist I spoke to, they are unavailable. Looks like modification time. I guess another example of TVR throwing on whatever was lying around in the parts store at the time, as I'm fairly sure these are original parts. Oh, and one end of a 5/8" hose is joined to a 5/8" connector, whilst at the other end is 3/4" fitting

When I was looking to replace the hoses on the 200 I took off the old ones and had a hunt around at Hose Direct. I managed to get some hoses with the right profile, just had to cut them to length. They had loads of half opened kits off various cars so there was plenty to choose from, most were in the standard Samco Blue though. I belive there are also companies that will make up Silicone hoses in any colour, even black if you want it to look standard(ish). Cheers.

I suppose you could even do it in 22mm copper with rubber just for the ends to allow engine movement...

I was going to add copper pipe as an alternative. Polishes up a treat. You can buy the flexi stuff, sort of a helicoil in the form that allows for some bending without the correct tool. Then solder a standard joiner on, one with a two ridges with the solder in to help make a good seal with the pipe.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to see if I can make it work with a comnbination of Samco hoses. In the meantime, does anyone know what purpose the 8mm hose linking the heater in / out hoses really serves - I'd like to remove it if possible. Ignore the valve in the hose - that's my mod.

Perhaps a bypass to stop the heater airlocking? It's not there on my car.

You seem to be missing the crankcase vent filter too...

And is that the old Rangey cloth harness protector? Probably losing 5bhp there...

Yes, that went AWOL years ago. As you can tell, its for (well, not at the moment) not polishing.:

Was a loom made up when the Motec was installed. I think dirty grey works quite well

Don't know why I didn't think of it before, but Tim Lamont - ACT - has these hoses in stock in blue silicon. Just what I wanted.

I have the u link and its before the valve. I have also added a bleed valve at the highest point to help bleed off the airlock. £2 worth of T piece, tube and screw valve.
