Size of D50 to D2X
Discussion
As you may know I bought Mrs Get a D50 for Christmas... and my God isn't it diddy! Don't get me wrong... I wish the D2X was this size and weight (but could do all the D2X does)! I mean I know you can drive a Land Rover over a D2X, and it will survive in Siberia longer than a Yeti, but It'd be nice if whenever one went out and packed the car that the back suspension didn't groan as you loaded the camera bag.
In case you've not seen them side by side...
Size isn't everything after all.

Know what you mean about the size differential. I went from using a Nikon F5 to an F80, which was a bit of a shock! I know it's still the bloke behind the camera that makes it happen, but the F5 felt like a stunning piece of kit. It inspired confidence and made me think harder about what I was shooting.
Have ordered the D200 and expect it sometime in January. First time I've had a DSLR and looking forward to going out to play...!

Steve, how likely are we to find pictures of such quality as your recent Rannoch pic coming out of the D50?
Tricky!
There is no reason why one shouldn’t be able to get almost identical photos from the D50 as the D2x. They can after all use the same lens - so assuming that is the case...
The thing is, the D2x is actually a lot easier to use than the D50 as all the important functions are 'under your thumbs' (with their own buttons - rather than hidden in a menu). This assumes the photographer is up to using all the buttons!
Of course, the pics will never be the same resolution on the d50 and there are quite a few technical differences (the metering is not as sophisticated on the D50, the bracketing, the white balance, the speed of shutter etc etc are all better on the D2x).
In short - apart from the resolution, it'll just be a lot harder work to achieve the same results. To be sure of getting the same photo I'd suggest one would have to spend a lot of time faffing about on the D50.
Analogy of the day: I might be able to do a bloody fast lap of Donington in a BMW M3, but I could continually lap that fast with a lot less effort in a Caterham.
