Did not ever expect to see this on the road again,

www.pistonheads.com/sales/60417.htm

Thats my "Cat. D" write-off car.

I did my first 28k elise miles in that, and now done 24k in my replacement one.

A case of I liked the elise so much I bought a replacement even before the insurance had agreed the type of payout and value.

Not sure if the pictures are only showing the drivers side for any reason, I guess all the passenger side damage has been fixed. ( Using a sign post as a side on ramp into a hedge is not fun.... )

If anybody is interested in the state of the car after the crash then I probably can find the insurance pictures.

Goes off road and round and round.... I dont recall the number of 360's because I had my eyes closed after the glass from the passenger window came in. Did not wish to risk it if the windscreen came in aswell. ( Eyes are hard to get fixed or replaced.... )

I was also supprised about the write off, but the post I used as a ramp hit the passenger door and caused some damage of the tub, about a 2 inch section.

Took it to JCT600 Leeds, and they sent me upto the bodyshop while the car was still on the recovery truck, the bodyshop would not even let me unload the car, they would not touch it even with such minor damage to the tub.

So for insurace it needed, new tub, front, door, glass, suspension, steering rack, repaint etc... and I'm sure you have all seen the prices between a dealer doing "replacement" work to the costs of actually getting it fixed.

The cost of parts was over 12k before you talk about labour and paint, so was an insurance write off. ( Which was fine by me... )

And it probably made a good bargin for somebody willing to make sure the tub was fine ( Which I'm sure it probably was. ) and then fix the bodywork and suspension.

For people that are interested,

Category A: Total burnout. No value left in the vehicle
Category B: Break only. Value lies in salvage
Category C: Damage to car is more than total value of car
Category D: Repair would cost almost as much as the vehicle is worth. Better to write off than repair. No comebacks for the insurers

Would I buy a car with any listed 'Cat damage', probably not. My life if worth more than a few £k cost saving and the unknown risk.
