Following a collegues fire at his house I am thinking of getting a nice safe to protect my documents with. Ive started looking at Rossengrens which aren't that cheap but look good.
Any thoughts as the safe will be visable and I intent to use it for years to come ie(20+)
My shortlist so far:
Phoenix Firefighter 0413
Rossengrens MultiDoc P132, MultiSec S130 or Sod it and have a Cappella 85w
Any thoughts and experiences. It is mainly for fire however I think a security rating would be good as in years to come the insurers might need one.
Rossengrens looks stylish and well made. Only problem is a Cappella weights 350kg so removals cost will go up!

What are the respective odds of getting burgled or having a fire?
What documents are not replaceable? Would have thought money might be better off on better fire protection, possibly even a domestic sprinkler system.
With a valuables safe the main criteria is going to be the amount of space inside it. Always get one hich is much larger than you need as it will soon fill up!

Hello James, happy new year! I picked up one from Woolworths for £20, the size of a pilot's briefcase. Portable and protects documents for (if I remember correctly) an hour in a fire of 900 degrees C. Not much security though, just an easily breakable lock, so not used for valuables.
Depends how big you need it and how long you expect a fire to rage for before it is extinguished?
I took the view that most documents (passports, birth certificate, insurance docs) can be replaced, even if it's a pain to do so. Also am gradually scanning things, burning onto CD / DVD and storing copies offsite (parents' house)

Most quality safes are fire-proofed to withstand around 20-30 mins exposure to extreme heat.
I bought a euro-safe last year (about the same size as the Rosengren Atlantic approx 3.5ft high 2ft wide)
Worth getting a good 'cash rating' on the safe from a good supplier cash rating is 10 times less than the jewellery rating (if i remember rightly) for insurance purposes
i keep everything in there and learnt a lesson in buying the biggest safe i could. Last safe i bought was a small Dudley, which was up to the job, but when you take into consideration the thickness of the walls/roof and floor there aint much left for your valuables.
Photo proofs video originals deeds etc can all be stored & its amazing the rubbish that you'll end up putting into it , i keep all inside 'damp proof document slips' that then go into the safe for storage.
When you order 'decent safes' the company normally supplies & fits themselves. Be careful if youre putting it anywhere upstairs (weight) or cellar cause mine weighed over 25 stone and took 3 grown men to lower into place!
They will end up saving you money on house-insurance in the long term if you store expensive jewellery /watches etc etc so its worth spending more for a bigger / higher cash rating if you can.
