Got to the stage where we need to replace our lounge furniture, and I'd like to get some quality leather sofas and chairs.

Potential problem is our 10yr old Springer Spaniel (who still, by the way, acts like a puppy).

With all the sales about at the moment, we have to make our mind up soon, so we wondered if anyone out there has leather furniture and a dog.

Is it worth me spending £4k in the sales, or will she have scratched the leather to death in 6 months.??

It'll be fine, just pull her claws out with a pliers.

n.b. tape her mouth shut first... it's full of pointy teeth.

We have had a leather sofa for the last 12 months, We bought a very good quality one and despite them treating the sofas like a trampoline they have survived very well. They have managed to scratch one section of leather behind a cushion and that is it.

Know what you mean, we've just spent 3k on a leather sofa and chair and are hoping to god the cats don't take a liking to it.
All the people we've spoken too have said their pets tend not to like the feel or smell of the leather and so stay away from it.
We also tried many different types of hide and picked a toucher scratch resistant one rather than a soft analine (sp) one.

Some friends of mine have had a leather suite for five or more years, they have a springer spaniel and have had (and sadly lost) an English Setter Puppy that was both huge and daft!, a terrier puppy and now a Toller puppy who's almost grown - oh and a cat! There suite has survived a lot better than a fabric one would have done.

I've got a leather suite and (although I've got none now) have had dogs for years - six at one stage!

For me, leather survives better than fabric because any of those lovely mucky (greasy) marks where the dogs walk past it will just wipe off.

If your dogs are walked plenty then their claws will be short and not much of a threat to your sofa. There aren't any dog-marks on my suite, which is cream, and which I had for several years before my last two dogs died. There are however scuffs from the rivets on jeans where me and Himself sit, and where my slippers go when I tuck my feet under my arse.

At the end of the day, furniture is just furniture, but you'll remember a loved dog for the rest of your life.

Our dogs definately like the leather sofa's (we can't get them off them). Also a good point about marks, at least you can wipe them down when they come in with muddy paws.

Thanks for the replies so far - keep 'em comming.

So in your experience, would a dark colour show up the scratches more than a light colour.??

Springers are notoriously mental, and ours is no exception.

We were looking at anything from dark brown right through to light tan - missus says it will match our decour.!!

Will be good quality - although by the sound of it, quality leather comes in a variety of choices.

We have a dark brown leather sofa from DFS - the quality after 2 years is crap, but the dog scratches can be covered by Zymol Leather conditioner - plus its wipe clean

err... you could always keep the dog off the sofa?

Just a suggestion you understand.

I've got a leather sofa with a hole in it spewing white batting that my Labrador seems to like digging out. Other than that, no problemo!

Don't let your dog on the sofa. I set the rules down when i picked up my new edition to the family 4 weeks ago. When he tries to be cute and see how far he gets he get a quick smack on the rear leg (he's a 6 month old Weimaraer sp? so he's big enough for a smack). He is starting to learn now.

Ours is chocolate brown so it doesn't show the dirt or scratches. Both of them are sleeping quite peacefully here at the moment, so they must like leather.
