996 Running Costs

Ok say I was to pick up a 996 ( 98-00 vintage- probably a coupe and a manual) with 50-60k miles on it and stick on say another 10k a year.. any idea on expected running costs..
is there any major difference in cost between a c2 and a c4 ( see im learning the differences in models now
)
i.e. servicing and bits dropping off...
what warranties are available and are they worth it? what is the likleyhood of a big bill on one of these things...
Also I do like the look of the basic car with the gt3 aero on it, Is that considered bad form? abit like sticking an M badge on a bmw 316 or is it accepted?

Running costs are pretty good - slightly higher for the C4, as servicing and tyres are more.
Re the GT3 kit - It's accepted (but DON'T badge it up as one!!!) and it sounds like you want to buy my car!!
I have a Porsche warranty, which is very comprehensive and costs £750 a year.
Big bills are fortunately rare - small niggles are not that uncommon, but probably better than other 5 year old cars.

"3 years from new" is why your servicing costs are so low. For a 98/99/00 model you are starting to get into 40K/60K or higher service items such as changing belts, spark plugs, transmission oil, certainly brake disc rotors etc. £1-2K is about right - look at the mileage and see what has been done already vs the recommended service intervals.
I would strongly suggest you get an official Porsche warranty - it's about £700 anually BUT you need to get the car PPI check by Porsche first before they will cover the car (which is fair enough - this is about £200 (a one off cost). Anything they find must be corrected at your cost. Obviously if it's an approved used car from Porsche/an OPC then all this is included (but doubt your'll find a 996 of this age in a OPC tbh..)
Do NOT be scared off by the RMS issue which you will find if hunting / researching 996's - if you get the warranty then it is totally covered anyway. Again, look at the history - recommend asking an OPC to check the full history (from the VIN number) to backup and issues that the car may have had, not just some OPC receipts for the major services ... Check for cooling issues especially on 98/99 cars, if the coolant tank has been replaced then great - if not, then use that as a bargin tool when you haggle on price...
C2 vs C4 servicing - the only difference here would be the need to change front diff oil at 90K and possibly more wear on the front tyres - all depending on how you drive it of course.

It's the Rear Main Seal and it's been known to be a problem on some 996 and Boxsters. It is covered by a Porsche warranty and the subject has been covered on this site.
