Porsche has unveiled the new Cayenne Turbo S, which it claims to be the most powerful Porsche homologated for road use, after the Carrera GT.

The behemoth sports 521bhp from its V8 bi-turbo power unit, 71bhp more than the Cayenne Turbo, with maximum torque of 531lb-ft between 2,750 and 3,750 rpm. Performance is impressive as a result: 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds, 50-75 mph in fifth gear in 5.4 seconds, and a top speed of 167 mph.

External differences identify the new model: 20-inch SportTechno design alloy wheels, four exhaust tailpipes, the model designation at the rear and the exclusive colour of navy blue metallic.

Upgraded turbocharger

The 4.5-litre V8 engine featured in the Cayenne Turbo S remains unchanged in principle, but the two intercoolers have been uprated for improved charge cooling, thereby boosting both engine output and torque.

The heat exchangers fitted in front of the wheel arches, together with the air supply and discharge ducts, are more efficient as a result of being fabricated from aluminium and are 13mm larger than those of the Cayenne Turbo.

This has allowed an increase in boost pressure, depending on the speed range, by up to 0.2 bar to a maximum of 1.9 bar, with engine output increasing further in the process, all with no increase in fuel consumption, according to Porsche.

Running gear

The Turbo S gets bigger brake discs and callipers than the standard Turbo up to 380mm from 350mm at the front, up to 358mm from 330mm at the rear, together with better heat dissipation. The Turbo S sports 20-inch SportTechno design alloy wheels as standard.

The remainder of the machine is the same or very close to the Cayenne Turbo, including its six-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, four-wheel drive with permanent traction control that transmits 62 per cent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels and 38 per cent to the front wheels in the basic mode, variable depending on conditions.

It comes as standard with air springs with six configurable levels of ground clearance and integrated self-levelling, along with electronically variable dampers.

Other kit

Interior appointments include xenon headlights with dynamically controlled, static curve lights, electrically adjustable comfort seats at the front with a memory function and seat heating, as well as heated seats at the rear, automatic air conditioning, ParkAssist, Porsche Communication Management incorporating satellite navigation, and Bose Surround Sound System all featured as standard.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S goes on sale in the UK on 25 February, priced from £81,565 and includes a Porsche Driving Experience programme.

£81,000? That seems like a lot of money for a tractor if you ask me. Updated performance, but still the ugly looks and of course it's a 4x4

But the CGt was 612 bhp - so how can 521 bhp be the most powerful Porsche?

Porsche is wrong to endow the car that is everything against the company stands for as a sports car maker with the most power. It'll be interesting to see how much bhp the 997 TT will arrive with later in the year.

Anything less than the Cayenne Turbo S will be a disgrace. A jeep with more grunt than the Porsche performance flagship (CGT excepted), WTF!

Yes but it's a good test bed for a monster engine. Also, in the Cayenne it's also got monster weight to shift.

Agreed...I'd rather they kept weight down, not chase ultimate power and bolt-on 2 extra rads and an extra oil-cooler to cope...and end up with the same bhp/tonne as the first place!

Edit: not that I can afford ANY 911, of course!

521bhp...!!! Convert that into brain cells and thats 71 more than the jerk off that nearly ran me and the missus off the road in his....who then had the cheek to give me two fingers.
Buddy firstly your driving a non turbo Cayenne so it aint all that plus you do know you shouldn't drive whilst on the phone dont you..? Finally, if your trying to look the bees knees can I suggest you remove the sticker from the back window advertising the leasing company whos car it is you are driving..

Seem to have hit that demographic right on the head. One would have to be pretty vain/ shallow to want a flying brick with a Porsche badge... Would be more sensible to opt out of said company car scheme, get the wife a Shogun and seek out a "real" Porsche.

if you ask me its ugly and a waste of money, if you want a 4*4 for that kind of money get the Range Rover Vogue SE Supercharged, sure it many not be as quick but it carries more class and prestige and style than the Cayenne could dream of, plus who wants to go really fast in a 4*4 anyway?,and also the BMW X5 offers greater value for money, and outshines the Cayenne in the looks department too, i think Porsche should stick to doing what they do best and build sports cars.

Pretty trick that. How close is it to detonation though, considering they have done "nothing else" including presumably running the same fuelling/map etc???? Can you get the same increase through aftermarket tuners with the original hardware???

Mojo.

1.9 bar is a fair bit of boost isn't it...? I agree it's a tasty motor and I wonder where else we might see it. Bodes well for the future anyway, even if we do have to put up with the Cayenne in the meantime.

Slightly tangential to the topic, I was wondering if the W8 Passat engine is effectively half a Veyron engine...? Therefore would it be feasible to bolt on just two of the Veyron's four turbo chargers and get 500bhp...? Hrm. Obviously not that simple, I bet the engine is really not the same at all, but you get my drift. Street sleeper anyone...?

1.9 bar = 28psi, thats pretty high for a motor that size. maybe they meant 0.9 bar (13psi) which sounds more likely for that sort of power.

a 4.5 V8 with 1.9 bar boost I'd expect to be at least 800 bhp, probably more.

1.9 bar absolute. Atmospheric pressure is 1 bar, so it's actually running 0.9bar boost.

I really think Porsche have got it wrong in this uber-SUV race, turbo cars are inherently less fun at slower speeds than NA engined cars. For an SUV it's nice to be 'able' to accelerate really fast but the real pleasure will come from oodles of low down grunt and a monumentally great soundtrack. That's where the 4.8is X5 scores over the Cayenne and I predict the new king of the hill (despite Porsche's efforts with this Cayenne Turbo S) to be the forthcoming Merc ML63. 500+ horse power of normally aspirated V8 with a loud rumbling soundtrack, now 'that' will do nicely.

Chris: motion seconded...Why?

Useless off the road, too kluncky as a real sports car, too expensive as a utility car, and, after the enquiry: 71% of PHers would not give the keys to the wife, so no good for school runs either...

Looks? Honestly: crap....

Leaves what? The hopelessly rich poser that already has a sportscar and another offroader?
