And it's my first Porsche after an M3 and (E39)M5 guess that's quite an introduction!

It's a nice Midnight Blue one from RSJ Sports Cars, beautiful colour and most out of character for me (I'm normally mister function over form) I keep finding myself looking at it thinking how sensational it is. It looks so purposeful.

Anyhow, still getting used to it after the M5 and as I suspected on the test drive I'm finding the turbo lag the biggest downside of it. But that accepted, once they start blowing boy does it go

I seem to fluff the gearchange a bit occasionally and then get massive lag going from, say, 2nd-3rd making it feel disappointing for a moment before it takes off again. I imagine as I get used to the ratios/revs/throttle I'll be able to keep it hard right through the box, right? Where do people generally change? Looking at the torque curve seems you could change anywhere and still be making colossal torque in the next gear.

I'm already going about 20mph quicker everywhere than before, and I love the way it doesn't blink the stability control at me every time I so much as look at the throttle mid-corner like the M5 did.

But only about 40 miles into it so far, very very early days.

RSJ (Joel) was nice to deal with. Felt I got a reasonable deal from a reasonable chap who I could trust -- and I don't think I can say that about any car dealer I've dealt with in the past...

Hi Andy,

Just make sure you keep it above 3000 rpm and you'll be fine. Also helps to avoid the variocam "stutter" that kicks in just below 3k.

Ive had a manual 996tt now for over a year after having a c4s and a gt3..i have to say i dont experience any turbo lag on the 996tt,its'almost immediate power delivery is what sets it apart from other cars and what makes it so quick.996tt has a flat torque curve from 2500 revs isnt that correct?

welcome too. I too found the stutter below 3k a bit disconcerting but having read about it relaxed a bit and told my wife "no it's not about to run out of petrol".
Changing gears I think I'm so preoccupied with the images flashing past my windows I havn't really focussed on optimun change levels although the torque around 4k seems to be able to astonish.
Scary

Don't really notice the turbo lag at all. Had a number of turbo cars so know about lag & the 996TT is almost like driving a NA car.
Also havn't noiticed the stutter below 3k revs either !

Hi Supermono:

Congrats on the car! About lag and stutter I'd advise you to try another Turbo form a friend or dealer because I had similar symptoms and all came down to the MAF, try to clean it first with NON-residue contact cleaner (you need a Torx w/pin wrench to remove the MAF) or could all come down to spark plugs (whats the year and mileage of your) since there was a change in plugs type from 2001-on. As long as you use top fuel (Optimax is seriously advised...)the Turbo is a super smooth (no noticeable stutter) and very limited lag.

Thanks for the advice, I suppose I'll just have to take the long way home to experiment a bit. Oh, what a chore. Hmmm, time's getting on, wonder if anyone'll notice me sloping off at 4

The M5 power delivery was totally instant and brutal from just over 2k, and this has noticable lag, but that's just fine and expected. I'll try and adjust my style a bit, when I'm not really trying hard I think I'm probably tuned for the M5's grunt coming immediately at 2100 so I'm changing up accordingly.

Shouldn't take too much practice to sort out.

Also it only has 20k miles on so might it still be a bit tight? Nothing that proper use of the throttle shouldn't sort out though.

Must say this car is the tits though

Cheers!

Congrats,
They all suffer with lag if your below 2.5-3k so dont worry. Obviously the higher the gear your in the more lag you will experience.
You know when its time to change gear because you will hit the limiter.
Now go test it!

Oh god don't talk to me about MAFs! I just got that problem sorted out in the M5 and it was like getting blood from a stone at the main dealer. At least the tt only has one of them (so it looks).

It's a 2002 with 20k miles, but the M5's had gone at <30k. Cleaning was a waste of time other than it showed me the way the car was supposed to be going for 5 minutes before they went wrong again.

How long would I expect to go between MAFs?

What do they cost? Is it easy to pursuade the main dealer that it needs replacing under warranty?

Actually speaking of this kind of thing I'd like to get it on a dyno fairly quicksmart just to make sure all's well. Any recommendations in Sunbury-on-Thames or Norfolk area?

Well 300 or so miles into it, and the engine is opening up nicely. I've either got used to it or it's got used to me, or maybe it was standing for a while before I got it. Don't know, don't care, it's really sweet now. Turbo lag no longer an issue, slowing down quickly enough not to rear end the slowsters on the road definitely is

The stability control had a few things to say on today's damp/slimy road blast but the way this baby feels sliding out of corners in 2nd/3rd is sensational. It's a really humbling car to drive.

Just cleaned it up and stood looking at it again. Was immitation female gentalia an option on the 2002 model? Should have been
