I think the answer is that you are allowed a sunstrip as long as it does not cover more than a certain percentage of your widscreen.

Tinted windows are also allowed as long as the tint is not more than a certain %age tint. 0% being clear, 100% being black.

I have a feeling that in widscreens some tint is allowed, but a much lower %age than other windows.

They are legal, you can't tint your windscreen IIRC. My fathers Legnum came with tints as standard, but you can actually see (as its an estate) the gradual darkening of the tint the further back you get. I think its 25-30% ish for fronts, then back in sliding scale.

The law concerning tinted windows applies to the front windscreen and also to the two front side windows on either side of the driver. For vehicles registered after April 1985 the front windscreen must have at least 75% light transmission through it, whilst the side windows must allow 70% in. For vehicles registered prior to 1985 the figure is 70% for both the windscreen and the front side windows.

I dont think there is any legislation relating to the rear screens.

Bear in mind windows maybe tinted by the manufacturer so not alot of extra tint can be used before it becomes illegal.

Sun strips i think have to be above the swept area of the wipers to comply.

After working with the VI or should i say VOSA for a few years now, window tints are becoming more common and as a result they are taking more action.

I have been told that most manufacturers tint their front side windows very close to the limit as Slider has already pointed out. Therefore any more tint added will make them illegal.

Obviously the more tinted they are then the more chance you have of getting stopped.

As Slider states that is the law as it stands, sunstrips are allowed to be a percentage of the visible glass area, these are usually marked with the letters 'AS-T' on most original equipment fitted glass, certainly the top tinted variety.
