Possible Problems ?

Took the car out for a spin at the weekend with a friend and let him have a drive - whilst he was busy exercising his face muscle's I was listening to the car and although it has made these noises since I brought it last month I feel I need to seek reassurances of ' they all do that sir'.
When accelerating the engine makes a ticking sound (almost like one of the HT leads shorting out) this doesn't happen if I maintain my speed it only happens if I apply any sort of pressure to the throttle also the gear box seems to whine quite loudly when decelerating is this the norm or could the oil level in the gear box be low - if so how difficult is it to check.
Any help appreciated.

Ticking does sound like exhaust manifold gasket. Whining could be low oil. Look under the car and have look for oil leaks. Failing that get some one to listen to it. Diagnosing sound on emial is difficult.

Took the car to peninsula yesterday and it turned out that the manifold was not torqued up to the correct amount - this has solved the problem somewhat but the ticking noise is now only noticable when the car is pulling in 4 or 5 gear so i suppose this points to a smallish hole in the manifold. Has anyone used cold weld on their manifold in the past or should i dig deep and pay for a new manifold?

Cold weld will not last on a manifold... 800+ deg C is a bit much for it!

I have had a similar noise from my V8s but didn't think anything of it and thought it was normal. After the rescent posts I checked mine and found the nearside manifold has cracked just behind the weld on one of the tubes as the four branch meets the single collector
I can't see after removing it how I'm going to get it welded all the way around

I'm not that mechanically minded and asked the same question about the manifolds to Topcats, who have my car at the moment(should have it back by Friday and can't wait!) They have told me that the standard manifolds absorb a lot of carbon and become very brittle - result- they crack. Apparently, unlike cast manifolds which are a lot stronger, they are very prone to cracking.
Stainless manifolds, I am told, do not absorb the same amount of carbon and therefore in the long run should prove money well spent.
Topcats are fitting a stainless system for me, including the Y piece, but the manifolds will have to wait until after christmas(they have also fitted a new camshaft and I've got christmas prezzies to buy!)
They have quoted £400 for a pair of manifolds plus the cost of labour at a very reasonable £38 per hour.

Good idea, was going to post a reply on his thread re: alloy switches, etc.
Topcats do a free collection/delivery within a certain distance and as I work 6 days a week, this is really a handy option, plus the advice from Warren, Charlotte and Brian at the company has been excellent so far.

Got my car going back to peninsula on the 19th to get the manifold welded if possible otherwise i'll have to stump up around £450 for a new one. To make matters worse the insurance company have told me that my alarm is no longer thatcham approved and they won't cover me for theft
until i get a new one 
so that's another £300 out of my pocket .
errr - sorry darling christmas is cancelled.
