Motorway Speeding
Discussion
A quick query for a client which BiB may be able to help with.
When mobile speed traps are being enforced on the MOTORWAY by the Police, does the driver of a vehicle which is recorded speeding always receive their NIP at the time by the roadside - that is to say are there other BiB down the road waiting to pull over the offender? In other words do police mobile enforcement teams always issue a NIP at the time, or can it arrive later with the offender not knowing that they have been "done" so to speak?
Obviously if you get pulled by a VASCAR car then you know you're done (as they press the ticket into your hand!!) but I was not sure about mobile traps.
Thanks

If you were stopped speeding you would be given what is known as the 'warning formula' at the roadside which is effectively your 'NIP" saying you are being reported for the question to be considered of prosecuting you for speeding ..... either this or you get a fixed penalty notice.
If not stopped they would need to be sent an NIP if they wanted to prosecute you.
The answer to your question is that they can clock you and send an NIP later but if it was normal police say standing at the side of the road with a Laser then they normally stop you at the time. It does depend a bit what you saw/went past ? If other cars were waiting further down the road after you saw someone with a laser I would imagine any offending car would be stopped at the time - that being the purpose of the cars further up.
One thing.... are you sure it was a speed check and not ANPR with stopping cars further up ?

Happily it isn't me who is pressing their nose up against the window waiting for the postman.
An acquaintance recently drove past a police officer in a yellow jacket at the side of the Motorway, and he was (quote) "pressing on..." - he admits doing about 100mph on a deserted Motorway in the inside lane (good lane discipline at least....) which is a bit daft but not insane.
He didn't get stopped down the road by any BiB, and he didn't see any other BiB, he's just bricking it in case he gets a NIP as 100mph means a ban.
I would have thought that if there is a police operation going they would pull you over down the road and b0llock you/issue the NIP there and then?

Not true, see here: www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?t=232609&f=10&h=0

If the policeman was just standing there, rather than standing there and pointing a laser gun at him, he’s probably OK.
A couple of years ago I went past two of police men standing on the other side of a dual carriageway at 1.35 units. A few miles further on another policeman, also on the other side of the dual carriageway, was waving “slow down” signals at me. So I took his advice and slowed to about 1-1.1 units – until I saw another police car pull out of a junction behind me so I just cruised at 0.7 units and was followed for about 5 or 6 miles until I pulled off to get petrol. They followed me into the petrol station, gave me a nasty stare and drove off.
I never heard anything more about it.

TSS said:I went past a trafpol car which was on its perch on the M... 6, I think, on NYE at a fair rate of knots (didn't see him because of a lorry, perfectly obscuring the view...), soiled my underwear as I saw him pull out and speed up... Dropped into the inside lane and pottered along at ~75. Trafpol pulls alongside, makes a 'slow down' motion, speeds up and pulls off at the next 'perch'. Nice man

. I'd rather take my chances with another person than a camera, but that view's made clear on PH every day, so doesn't really need saying again.
was in the west country a while back, no paying attention to the speed and found it to be in the 80-90 mph region and it might have been on the A30, saw some guy on a bridge waving to me to slow down, realised as I passed him that he was old bill and figured a good time to leave the road at the next junction.
Not more than 5 mins had passed when saw a patrol car lights blazing heading down the same road I was on, took a long detour and met up with probably the same car later, had them tailing me for a few miles and scowling after the passed me by..... Think the plod on the road bridge was just too high to tell the number plate accurately enough

Really doesn't sound like a situaltion I'd get worried about.
A] Police do not stand on the hard shoulder detecting speeders.
B] It's extremely bad practice to sit on the hard shoulder in a car detecting speeders.
C] If they had recorded the speed, they would most likely stop and report at the time.
D] He would have to have some kind of recording method. If he was standing outside the car, this would have been visible.
But police can NIP by letter, it should be sent to reg keeper within 14 days.
But I believe your mate should rest easy with this one.
