993 Cab or Boxster S?

Input much appreciated as to the pro's/con's of the above. It would not be used everyday, but will be used regularly! and on touring trips, maybe even taking in the 'ring. Budget 20k tops I reckon.

Despite both cars being made by Porsche there isn't much the same about them. Sure the roof comes off...

In your shoes I chose Boxster S - twice. I hope that's a recommendation.

Disadvantages of the Boxster is that it is absolutely but positively only ever a two seater car. If you care about the 911 thing then its not a 911. Oh dear.

Advantages are mid-engined handling, two boots (excellent for touring - and its *all* under cover and hidden away for security - unlike the rear seat area of the Cab), the roof in no way compromises luggage space - you can use all the luggage space available and still raise and lower the roof. The roof tucks away neatly upper side out - so no need for a tonneau. It also can come with the full set of modern systems (stability control etc) which may matter to you if it will be used in all weathers.

Both cars are Porsches - which means they're both great. Try 'em both if you can!

I'm pleased that you said "some", but the "some" are really a very tiny minority. I personally miss my 944 Turbo loads and think all Porsches are great.

Anyway, yesterday I had my 993 Targa parked next to my brother's Boxter. He said that he wished he'd gone for a 993, and that apart from the BHP he'd enjoyed his old MX5 more than the Boxter! He may still be realling from his recent £8k engine replacement though!

Ooooouch! £8K! Ouch ouch ouch. Your poor bro. Blimey! No warranty, I take it? And bought a new one and did it properly...ouch ouch.

Now the MX5 is a great car - no doubt about it....

But enjoying it more than a Box? Get him down to some Track Days. Then he'll start enjoying it again!

He bought it from one of those car hypermarkets, but the repairs were done at an OPC (hence price), so I guess at least some if not all was warranty'd. Dunno

Oh...I have just thought of something highly in favour of the 993 (this coming from a Box owner).

Depreciation.

The Box will continue to drop like a stone for a while yet. 993 prices will fall much more slowly as a percentage.

This for two reasons:

1) They're older
2) The cachet of being "last of the air cooled"

Not sure about the 993 Cab meself. I'd probably go with a Coupe or the Targa...

Boxster S all the way for me

993 cab has very compromised looks (like a pram) and a 986S will be as fast 95% of the time

also much more modern design inside

once you get down to £20k the Boxster will certainly not be depreciating fast either
