The release fingers that are pressed on by the release bearing snap off the clutch cover meaning that the release mechanism doesn't work. This results in clutch drag making it very hard to select gears, starting with 1st & reverse when stationary and then gradually becoming all gear changes. When mine first started to happen, the selection actually improved as the car warmed up, but over the course of a thousand miles or so it became a constant struggle to engage. The pedal feel stayed fairly constant, just getting slightly heavier towards the end of it's life. Eventually all the fingers snap off and you can't release the clutch at all.

My recent clutch job cost £1300 including refacing the flywheel and a new slave cylinder. The labour element was about £400 of it. Definitely get them to check the slave and reseal/replace as required.
