Hi folks,

I'm about to take the plunge and buy a 964 (the Grey one at the top of 911virgin.com stocklist).

I'm not being a complete muppet, and am having Peter Tognola do an inspection on the car.

Is there any good advice that you have for a 911 newbie like me?

16.5k for a lhd 964 seems steep to me. my cobalt blue rhd will be up for 18.5k v.soon, and ive spent 15k on it over the 4yrs Ive had it.
...but then mine is sexual

ah well a labour of love i s'pose

will

ps. check that the dizzy belts have been replaced (and when), that the clutch/flywheel have both been replaced, that the front shocks arent, well, shocking, and that the geometry/tracking is correct (they drive like dogs if not).

If you can stretch to 20k and rate comfort and everyday practicality highly, I would seriously recommend a 993 over a standard 964.

If you want the ultimate performance Porsche in many eyes, find around 24k and get a 964RS. They are *much* more than just a 964 with bits on.

Not a bad choice, though, but make sure all the right bits get done and that Henry's charm doesn't run out before the sale is complete

Thanks for this.

14.5 not 16.5

Dizzy belts replaced by JZ Machtech as part of a major service last year (car now due a minor service - how much should I expect?)

Front shocks seem fine, and I'll have a 4-wheel alignment done anyway.

Clutch and flywheel more of an issue, car has done 170,000km so it's probably on it's 2nd or 3rd by now...
Feels fine (FWIW).

Any more advice eagerly accepted.

Dizzy belts no great shakes. Cheap enough to put new belts and vent kit in.

Minor service will be about 300 quid from independent.

Clutch and flywheel may be OK if they've been replaced properly, but watch out for master cylinder etc.

I dunno, for 14.5k I'd get a new shape 3 series s/h, 'cos I'm getting a bit sad in my old age

Or how about a nice 968CS like Scottster got for 10k? Less miles (60k) and Scottster rates it after his 964 and 993.

I'll get my coat...

I hope you are getting a good warranty, lhd 170k kms doesn't strike me as that much of a bargain.
a mate sold his 90 G plate rhd with 87k miles for £14k a few months ago with fsh....I would not want to buy a highish miles 964 without speaking with the previous owner.Good luck

Hell that is a lot of miles for the price I have to agree!!

I sold my totally mint lovely silver 964 with only 79k miles on for £14k.

Looks like the car you are talking about (assuming I've got the right one) now says "Deposit Taken" on the 911virgin site. Does this mean you've taken the plunge? If so congrats and let us know how you get on!

Well, I've had Peter Tognola have a look at it, and he says:

Leak coming from the top end somewhere (hand size pool of oil after being in the garage overnight) - estimate top end rebuild 1500-2000+VAT

Disks and pads 500-600+VAT

Plus due a 12,000 mile service (any ideas on cost?)

Seems like this could add up a bit...

On the other hand, Henry says he's prepared to revert it to a retail sale (in other words guaranteeing that service+top end+warrenty i.e all work will not go above retail price = bug price + 2k).

I guess what this means is I get top-end overhaul + service + brakes and pads for 2k.

This might seem like a bargain if I wasn't already paying 13.5k for a LHD 170,000km 964 (albeit one with a high spec and seemingly in very good condition otherwise)...

Neon,

You're being sucked into Henry's web her mate. That car, with those miles on it will never fetch you anything like £15.5k when you come to resell it, leaks/brakes/serviced or not. It's just far too high miles. (and H knows that)

I wouldn't be worried by leaks 'too' much (although yours sounds worse than most) as they all leak a bit but servicing isn't nice on those (budget £500+ for a basic 12k service and hope nothing else needs changing)

I would seriously consider looking around as that price can get you a better example. Obviously I can't comment on the overall condition and am assuming it's very good.

In fact, a quick scan of the AT site gives you a RHD one for £15,250, a LHD Cab for £14,250 and a nice looking LHD one with only 61k miles for £15,500 at Oakhills...... There will be loads of others too, don't rush into the one you've seen!

And to think a lot of Henry's customers wouldn't get an inspection, too...

13.5k seems OK, but at nearer 16 it's no bargain.

Spend the money and get a decent one, or keep the 968CS, get a really nice 3.2 Carrera (G50 box) or buy an E36 M3 Evo. They'd be my options

HELL, didn't see you already had a yellow CS (arguably the best car in the world ever) - that obviously puts a whole new angle on it.

Don't think a standard 964 is gonna rock your boat much after the CS IMHO, having owned each.

Errr, neon's CS is yellow with a yellow gear gaiter. Ring any bells Scottster. I think you may both own the same car... have you both got a timeshare 968 by any chance???

Well, the whole reason I'm getting rid of the 968CS is that now I have a baby daughter I need some back seats, so keeping it isn't really an option. Shame, as I love it dearly and it's been a blast

The AT site? Where ca I find that? Does Oakhills have a web site too?

Cheers...

Then all I'd have to do is to wangle my deposit back off Henry (who didn't seem too pleased with my wanting it back...)

Well, I'm now looking at 15.5k for the car, including new discs and pads, service and top-end overhaul.

Is there anything that I might consider having done at my cost whilst the engine's out and stripped down? (Dizzy vent kit...)

Change of pads or discs from stock?

Any advice appreciated.

No, I'm not looking to add a Big Red brake kit or a Roock 3.8 conversion :-)
