I'm going to a dealer tommorrow and looking at a 2002 Tuscan 'S' with 30k miles on the clock. It's price reflects the mileage, however not by the £4.5k it would cost for a rebuild.

This may seem like a silly question, but if I bought it, would I be living on borried time?

So is that 30k with no rebuild at all?

Is the dealer going to offer any kind of warranty on the car, and if so how long, and will it be in writing???.......

Too many questions to ask;

Is it a recognised TVR dealer ie main or specialist?

If not just a used car dealer, different attack to approach...

If TVR dealer, i would expect they stock (good cars)
ie you have a FULL service history - no gaps (ANNUAL or every 6k miles whichever sooner)
plus host of other bills, this mileage, expect the dampers to have been replaced, maybe bushes, check the chassis, could have been by the seaside (any tvr concern ) ask if the engine has ever been rebuild, if you don't ask , not obliged to tell(rebuild could be a good thing, as any warranty still valid, relating the rebuild. if no rebuild, again could be good, ie it's a good un, ask them to put in writing, they've inspected the engine and at the tme of sale have found no issues.

If NOT a TVR dealer, if no full service history, I would expect a much bigger discount, for age mileage, plus a cast iron warranty. Compare prices on auto trader, Print out a sheaf of other cars, similar age mileage, lower mileage (and of course cheaper)

Hum and har, is it a popular colour for resale (if not - even if you like it) knock a bit more cash off. Give the previous owner a call, see why he sold it, ask any problems, or the owner before that.
etc,etc,etc

go get yourself a relaible bargain, any doubts walk away, least a hundred on sale at any time in the country.

I have to assume so as there’s no evidence of a rebuild

A 12 month warranty, although I need to find out who’s underwriting it as I’ve heard that most companies will not honour TVR engine claims as they are due to ‘wear and tear’

Used car specialist, although it does have full history (I’ve not seen the book yet). It’s in cosmos blue, which shouldn’t offend too many people

So what we’re saying is if I can get a decent trade in on my Chim and knock the price down a bit then it’s a goer????

Well to know whether a goer or not, would really depend on knowing the price????

Make sure it's a FULL history, ie service stamp, plus all mot's, PLUS OTHER invoices for work done. OR evidence of work done, ie tracking/geometry/ dampers, etc, etc.

The price is £26k, although I've just spotted one at Fernhurst's with 42k for £22k:-

TVR TUSCAN S, 4.0 Manual Convertible, 2001Y.
Y2 JOC, Reflex Charcoal with Biscuit full hide interior, cranberry wool carpets, air con, gas discharge lights, CD, 18 inch spider alloys, excellent service history, 42,600 miles, just serviced, and benefiting from our service package. £21,995

You could argue that even with a £4.5k rebuilt the above seems ok (and dealers by law have to offer 3 months comprehensive warranty).

Comments please!!!

Could be argued that a 2003 Tuscan is just as good as a 2000/2001 one. If you can save by getting the older one I would pocket the rest £5000 so if the worst should happen in the next 12 months or more, it pays for a rebuild. That way you should be running for years to come.

I must be getting old.

Each TVR purchase I've made has been completely heart over head, form over function etc etc etc. I don't ever remember having a list of boxes to 'tick.' Just enthusiasm and desire.

I wanted one, pure and simple. I wanted that car SO bad. I saved up, I bought one. It's a handbuilt plastic car from Blackpool. It's a ripsnorting beast of the first order. It has heart and character and I love it. When it went wrong, I didn't start squealing like a stuck pig. I got it fixed. And I still loved it.

I had an enquiry from some knob on my car recently who wondered why I'd had a new radiator fitted a while back. When I told him it was because I'd picked up a stone thru the rad, and I was losing water -and hence paid for a new rad to be fitted- he actually said, " Yeah, I heard that TVR's were unreliable"

Unbelievable.

How, exactly, is it the fault of TVR that a stone went through my radiator?

I don't usually post, as you all well know, but seeing all these " What should I do?" or "Am I doing the right thing?" or " Tell me which car I should buy so that when it blows up I can blame it on everyone else" kind of posts bothers me.

Be a brave person.
Make your decision, and live with it.

Enjoy your purchase, it'll be the best thing you've ever done, believe me.

Any doubts?
Buy an Audi TT.

Off topic, but relevant in a strange way, I have read a post by a guy with a TT who had his gearbox literally combust at 60mph! Needless to say the effect was similar to slamming on the brakes with no abs...

Oh, and Audi quoted him a rediculous amount (>£5000 from memory) to fix it. No 'goodwill' either...

If you check my profile, you’ll see that I’m exactly the same. I have a Chim that I’ve spent far too much money on, just because….

You can’t blame a bloke for doing some due diligence on a Tuscan, especially with the well known problems of the Speed Six.

Anyway, found a nice 2002 Tuscan ‘S’ yesterday from a fellow PH’er and put a deposit on it. He’s kindly dropping off to me on Friday – can’t wait!!!

Just need to sell the Chim now......

Yes please. I've found a car on Autotrader that fits that exact description from a Dealership called GG Steel in that area. Is that the car?

Are you going to have a look at it?

May well do. I've noticed that this car has been advertised for a while now so I'm sure the guy is keen to get shot of it.

Did he indicate how much of a "deal" he would give?

Did you buy that black/purple S with anthracite alloys from the guy in Swansea?

If you did, do you mind disclosing how much he agreed to sell it to you for. He said a dealer would only give him 21k part-ex.

It's a buyers market at the mo, that's for sure!

I think you'd get the GG Steel one for sub £25k (I paid more for the one I bought)

The car I bought was advertised at a similar price (£26895) and I negotiated down slightly from there
