Computer keeps freezing

Over the past week or so my laptop has been doing strange things. It has started randomly freezing, not even ctrl+alt+del works...it's literally dead!
This can happen half way through me doing something, and even part way through windows start up.
I have run virus checks, ad-aware checks and registry mechanic but it's still doing it.

You wouldn't believe how long it took me to work the steel toecaps bit out 
And yeah I would have said Memory too.. if you've got more than one stick in, take one out and see if the prob keep occuring (as long as that doesn't leave so little memory it won't work at all
). That should help narrow it down..
Otherwise there are memory checking tools such as.. Memtest86
