Its gone again.... :-)
Thought it was finally fixed when they replaced the radiator fan but had a massive cooking session today and AA and garage reckon its the head gasket as the exhaust is smoking a lot (it does have a de-cat pipe, would this make for a lot more smoke?)
So its in for HGF, AA parts and labour hopefully covering again but the guy said that it will cost £700-750 for the repair, so I will have to pay 2-250?
seems steep to me, im sure people on here have said about £4-500 for a HGF.. ?
Any ideas for an S1?
He said he was going to change camblets etc as well, is all that necessary? or worth getting done anyway?
Tks.

If you're replacing the headgasket, replacing the cambelt is a worthwhile thing... cambelts are cheap, but there's a good few hours of labour in doing it on its own... if the head's coming off, the cambelt has to be removed and refitted anyway so may as well make it a new one

CRP shouldn't make it smoke any more... I'd say if it's blowing some white smoke/steam out the exhaust then HGF is likely

My head gasket went in a big way on Christmas eve

Didn't have any of the white smoke that a lot of people report, just a very strange idle, loss of power and the water temperature going through the roof. When I popped the boot release, the header tank was full of oil and the dipstick was covered in mayonaise.

Head has since been removed and sent away for skimming etc but two cracks were found in it !!

Now looking at a very big bill...

Ahhhh yes, the toyota engine - light? bulletproof?.... Must be why Gooby lunched his.

Actually when the elise S1 came out, Lotus was in dire straits. It was the car that saved them, but a lot was done on the cheap. The more recent k series versions were a lot better and there are things one can do to help prevent HGF.

I'm sure some of the more modern engines are a better proposition but don't forget the S1 Elise was launched 10 years ago this year - at the time the K series was about the best thing for the job.
