make sure you goto tools-internet options-connections-lan settings and tick the box "automatically detect proxy settings".

If that doesn't help, is the router working as a DHCP server (i.e. passing out IP address to the machines that connect), is it passing out the right gateway? Goto start-run-"cmd" and type in "ipconfig /all" and see what it says.

try Internet Explorer - it's so tied into the OS generally that you need that to work before something like Firefox will (which just uses the infrastructure rather than controlling it).

the dos box / ipconfig should display the network connection settings regardless of the type of interface used.

Does the laptop work where you have your desktop?

does your wireless connection use encryption, is the router configured to only allow certain mac address, can you ping the router (I'm assuming you know the IP), have you tried "repairing" the network connection, if it's XP have you ran the Network Setup wizard?

Has your desktop previously been connected to the internet via a dialup connection? If so it's possible that the Internet Options -> Connection -> Dialup options have been set to always dial your default dialup connection. You need to set it to 'never dial a connection' or 'dial whenever a network connection is not present'.

If all that's correc then it may be that the TCP/IP bindings aren't set up right on the wireless adapter, but check the dialup settings first.

start-control panel-network setup wizard. there is also the wireless setup wizard...

"ping" is simply done by going to command prompt and typing "ping " and the IP address i.e. "ping 192.168.1.1"

I don't know much about wireless encryption and the like to be honest

Have you got the default gateway set in the connection properties?

Should be the IP address of the router.

Should have said yesterday, I was down your neck of the woods...

I would suggest three things then:

a) you haven't got the right domain / gateway / ip address / dns server
b) the router is refusing to allow you to connect - check MAC address, encryption etc.
c) there is something interfering with the connection state such as a firewall (check the windows default)

I don't think you need a network bridge configured in your setup, I'd go to control pannel/network connections and delete it, then reboot. It will only be making things complicated!

My wireless card came with a little application that I can use to find out what IP address my adapter has been assigned, what IP address the router is at, etc. If you're running XP you can use the wireless manager to do similar. Can you find the IP address of your adapter, and of your router?

If you do the ipconfig /all thing again this time it shouldnt go on about bridges, you're looking for the entries that relate to the wireless connection (might have to scroll back up to see it if you see what I mean)

In firefox, the proxy settings should be 'direct connection'

What is the model of your wireless router?
