Just watched a brief bit where a jumbo ditches, remains intact and sinks with all the passengers in an airtight hull. How on earth did they get money to make such drivel, primary school children have a stronger grasp of physics than the producers of this nonsense.

I saw this film at the cinema when I was a kid and, even then I thought it was absurd.

Well if you analyse all films like that, hardly any of them should ever be made

Aw come on, there's stretching a point and there's absolute nonsense, everyone learns science at school so this is the equivalent of failing O level physics............besides you don't have a telly so what do you care?

Er... Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Titanic... utter nonsense all of them (and more besides).

It's not that I have no telly, I just have no imagination

And planes HAVE ditched in the sea before: just because none did it like that doesn't mean it couldn't happen...

LOR and Harry P are acknowledged fantasy films but Titanic is another load of barf as is Die Hard, Speed etc. You can still make a good film and have some tenuous link to reality it's just that I can't think of any right now........and anyway a jumbo stalls at 160 knots or something so when you hit the sea at that speed it becomes shrapnel very quickly, I'm going for a beer

All the Airport series were tripe - apart from the very first film "Airport" itself - whiuch was reasonably realistic and based on Arthur Hailey's original novel.

I think you have a point. As we are surrounded more and more by undereducated and technically ignorant individuals, the ability to differentiate between what happens in the movies and what is possible in the real world has disappeared. Films like "Airport '77" and it's immediate predecessor, the equally proposterous "Airport '75" (which involved a head on collision between a 747 and an executive jet)may have contributed to this confusion.

I despair sometimes. The real world is being subjugated by a Hollywood induced nonsense world.

Sure but that slid off the runway into shallow water - its on the bottom in that pic.

Ditching in open seas, I dont thing any large airliner has survived the impact.........not that I can ever remember one making a controlled ditch into the sea anyway come to think of it!.

No you are correct but it broke up badly and again was in shallow(ish) water.

The only very large aircraft ditching I'm aware of was the hijacked Ethiopian Boeing 767 which broke up on hitting the water. Only a handful on board survived. Those big engines under the wing act like huge drag chutes in the water and rended a flat ditching virtually impossible.

Airliners are not sealed against the outside atmosphere. They draw in air through vents and pressurise it to breathable levels. Therfore, if an airliner survived a ditching and sank, it would quickly fill with water.

Eric, spot on, the point I have benn trying to make. Bullets don't kill they make you go 'OW' and writhe around a bit, crash a car and it'll explode etc etc
