Just drove the section of the A3 from Tolworth to Guildford. It looked to me that the lights on the NSL signs weren't working on the initial signs just after Tolworth. AIUI this would make the entire section down to the 50 section unenforcable.

The are lit by the streetlights there, but I think they need their own lights as well. A check would need to be done that they are definitely not working - I went past not slowly.

Is there a requirement that the NSL signs have to be illuminated to be valid?

So, if it's more than 50 metres from a street lamp it doesn't need to be illuminated? - Streaky

There are some other situations where it needs to be illuminated - but if it is a change say from a 40 to NSL out in the countryside, away from streetlights, it does not need to be illuminated.
