Need to buy a Suit for Xmas party

I need to get dressed up for the GF's Works do. I have no intention of wearing a penguin suit and so have decided to get a nice suit which I can use for visiting my more expensive clients also.
Simply put - I have NEVER bought a suit other than off the peg at next or whatever in my life - any reccomendations of how and where to do this by saturday? I live near Oxford and spend a couple of days a week in London (West/A40 ish).
Also next week is a School Dinner night in newbury and I need to try and find an outfit for that if anyone knows of any good clothes warehouse type places where I might get something.

Depends on your shape / size and how much you want to spend. YSL off the peg jobbies seem to fit tall skinny types... Ted Baker ones if you've got slightly bigger shoulders. Personally I'd go for the latter as they are pretty good for off the peg suits, and should only cost around £250.
Go for a simple single breasted suit, as they never seem to go out of fashion. Avoid a pinstripe for the same reason, black does all occasions, blue most, grey makes you look like an MP.

Its got to be a nice black Armani.
If you can be bothered to drive that far then there's a shop called Michael Chell in Maidenhead and they have a good selection of Armani suits ( and other top brands ). Usually have some good deals. Staff are helpful and they can do any alterations necessary too.

Go to "Suits You", and buy a 2 piece black single breasted suit, with three buttons. Make sure that it's at least a wool blend, and preferably pure wool.
You can then wear it with a bow tie and collar, and not a single person will realise you aren't in a dinner suit (a cummerbund will complete the illusion).
If you go for a man made fibre, the suit will look cheap. Black is appropriate for weddings and funerals, and single breasted can be worn open or buttoned (don't do up the top button).
remember, you shoudl have some cuff showing (so double cuff shirts, for 25 pounds from M&S look nice) below the bottom of the suit sleeve, and the trousers should sit comfortably on your shoes, otherwise you'll get half mast when you sit down with your legs crossed.
Try lots of different ones on. Do NOT buy polyester. ome will ook a million dollars, some will look pretty bad.
If you get one that fits well, it will look almost as good as a bespoke one, and it should last for years and years.
Don't buy machine washable, grease resistant, stain resistant, or anything similar. You don't need to dry clean them every tim they are worn, and they should be humg on a decent hangar, as a wire one will wreck the trousers.
Oh, and remember, James bond never wore a wing collar, so it's perfectly appropriate to war a standard collar with a bow tie. You get the added advantage that no-one can tell then that it's a clip on.

You could just embarrass your missus and turn up a la Les Patterson...
Get a 'nice' frilly fronted shirt and spill egg yolk beer down it. Down a bottle of Whiskey.
If the conversation turns to fine literature ask the other people on the table if they have read Bravo Two Zero.
I guarantee you'll be the most entertaining person there.

Thanks for the excellent info - I really hate buying clothes for work (The smartest I get for work is long sleeved t-shirt and jeans) but i hate renting a one off suit that makes me look daft even more.

Now can anyone think of something for me to do for 5 hours whilst the Gfriend's work colleagues all talk shop and i am locked in the same room as them. I tried playing devils advocate last year but they all get to a certain point where they just pretend you aren't there because you threaten their existence too much - it's a kind of instant denial thing.

Don't want to give too much away about the company but recycling and green issues are big on the agenda.
My standard arguement is that nobody will help the environment etc if you a) don't tell them why their actions can help and b) if its going to cost them more.
After about 2 minutes of real world they go into safety mode...
