Spare 5 point race seat ?
Discussion
A small favour to ask the PH motorsport collective.
A friend of mine has recently started in motorsport in the rookie rods series and is in the process of building his first car. He needs a racing seat capable of taking a 5 point harness. Obviously, he could buy a new seat, but at this low level of racing, he is trying to keep the costs down so is looking for second hand. He has tried Ebay but other than that and his racing colleagues, he's stumped.
Any ideas where he might be able to source one ? Anyone have a spare/ old seat that they would be willing to sell on ?
Cheers

he didnt say he was looking for a knackered seat with holes in it and no structural support? he was asking if anyone knew where to get a cheap seat second hand. I am sure that there are a few people out there selling seats which would be perfectly suitable for rookie rods but no longer comfortable or comply with regulations etc for a particular series.
For someone "cutting the BS factor in motorsport" you dont seem to practise what you preach. If the belts and cage are good enough and the seat is securely mounted, does it matter if it is second-hand?

Yes it maters a whole lot because that seat has to support a body weight that in some typical impacts could have to take 3 times the weight of its occupant. No mater how good your cage, belts and seat mounts are that seat is going to flex. If its already weakend it will snap or flex further. As it flexes the belts do less and wip lash injuries are increased because the nice comfortable seat acts like a spring and the driver becomes a wrag doll in the seat. Hence head and back injuries etc. Its a fact I'm afraid.
Since I guess we are talking the lowest quality seats already to buy an unkown one one is to increase the risk further.
I guess to put it another way, unless you know the history of the seat second hand is not an option.
I did'nt however for one minute think you were talking about cutting holes in it although its been done before

i think what i meant was "if buying a second hand seat means he can afford to go racing and get involved why shoot the idea down?" I think it would be productive to say find a second hand one, ask a lot of questions, try to see the car it was fitted in and then make a decision.
I quite agree with your comments regarding the flex of a seat and the connotations in an accident. I can only assume that big accidents occur even in rookie rods but this is grass roots motorsport and we should be helping these people rather than telling them to go and give Demon Tweeks et al another £500 and pushing their dreams further along the road to nothing.

I think Simon's advice is good, and if someone is starting out in motorsport they may not realise the risks of buying a 2nd hand seat.
Personally, I wouldn't ever buy a seat, helmet or belts that were not brand new - you just don't know if they've been involved in an impact that may adversely affect their ability to protect you.
It is a personal choice though, but it is something that should be considered.

I wouldn;t touch a second hand seat personally.
Tell him to phone the cobra factory, there's a factory shop there where they sell them cheaper, or get on e-bay, theres loads of ebay shops selling new ones. I got a pair of FIA approved seats, and 2 sets of 4 point road-legal (ie not race-legal) harnesses for £200 delivered. Hardly alot when you consider the safety implications of not having the right kit.
Demon Tweeks prices are a necessary evil for club racers in my mind.
