Exhaust with no baffles - how loud

I'm having the rear section (from the centre section backwards) of my exhaust replaced soon and am tempted not to have the baffles put in the silencer - can anyone give me some idea how loud it is likely to be with the backbox just acting as an expansion box?
Note my exhaust has no centre box, just a pipe joining the y-piece, and only a rear 'european style' silencer.

Do the baffles increase the back pressure that much?
Sorry chris I dont really know with a great big Wedge V8, I am only just starting to understand em, (ask me about overbored A series and I can tell you)

Hi CDT, can offer a little help with regards to your exhaust queery, my Wedge (350) is currently using an exhaust that is basically a straight through system ie: it has no centre box and two very small 'smoke' box's at the rear.....as a result of this there is very little back preasure and a slight loss of torque at lower revs, on the up side, it generates more power in the mid to top rev range, and creates a hell of noise.
With regards to the increased noise level, the neighbours have awarded the car an ASBO! and it certainly deserves it!
P.S if you have this done to yours,please choose from the following option list when driving for more than an hour:
1) Buy a pair of ear-plugs (not so cool)
2) Carry a pack of extra strength Paracetemol (more discrete)

I presume the silencer box will quieten it a little, even without the baffles? It is a normal size rear box.
I had a big hole in the exhaust a few weeks ago, hence why it needs a replacement. The exhaust had a gap so the rear part wasn't connected to the front. This didn't seem excessively loud, although some of the exhaust gasses were still going through the rear silencer.
Is it going to be any louder than a Griff (with a cat) with a sleeved exhaust?

The 520 ran for a weekend or so with a straight through box due to it blowing the baffles out of the exhaust. It was measured at 119db at 4000 rpm. Fitted a standard exhaust pretty quickly. It was too loud. Also the engine gained more power with the new system. These engines do like a bit of back pressure.
Just to add a few more comments, I would definately prefer the car to be a touch quieter, so would recommend you follow the advice from the other threads and install some form of silencer in the system.
As I previously mentioned, mine is a straight through system but forgot to admit that it also has no balancer pipe so is actually two seperate systems and I may have to change the back box's for a pair of silenced ones in the near future as the constant exhaust drone at 50 - 60 mph becomes annoying after a while and on one occasion even attracted the attention of the Boy's in Blue.
(still sounds awesome when driving through town though!)

I've been listening to lots of TVRs on various videos and I've realised what I want is a deeper sound at idle and low revs and that not having baffles probably won't give me this. Has any one got any ideas how I can achieve this? I'll probably give someone like JP exhausts a call and see what they can suggest.
Is this partly down to the shape of the tail pipe(s)?

I've got an RT Racing stainless system on mine. The centre box is straight through, with I think packing in the box. I have passed a steel rod straight through it. It's fairly quiet at only 99dB but has a lovely deep note to it and produces loads of torque.
