Bicycle Security
Discussion
As part of my daily commute, I am going to start cycling to the train station on a morning and back home again in the evening.
This means my bike will be securely locked up in a purpose built cycle stand alcove at my local Station, along with around 25 other cycles, for most of the day and some of the evening. Any other PHs leave their cycles at stations, and have you had any 'security' or 'vandalism' issues?

I don't know if it'll affect you, but the south coast trains are now stopping cycles being taken on the train during peak hours (7am-10am & 4pm-6pm or there abouts), I thought this was a bit odd as they always bleat on about environmental issues, but surely a lot of people ride the journey to work via the train. Oh well, good luck if they let you do it.
I don't leave a bike at a station so I'm not help there though.

Don't think he's taking it on the train.
Had a bike pinched once when I used a plastic covered steel wire padlocky thing. Just went straight through it with boltcutters I guess.
My advice - crap (or crap looking) bike, and serious lock - either a decent D-lock (although I heard the trick with cheap ones was to freeze them and break with a hammer) or perhaps a sold secure motorbike lock.
All you have to do is make yours harder to nick then the bike next to yours.

Bit like some people do here with their TVR's and Nissan Primeras ...
Oli.

.
Or just put a car jack in them and wind it open until it breaks - how my prized Dual Slalom bike was nicked by scrotes.
Ride a really cheap looking rusty old nail if you're leaving it at a station. Any lock can be broken, given time. I have a monster hardened steel chain thing thatI have to carry slung over my shoulder - but even I don't leave the bike out for more than half an hour unless it's in sight.
yup
can always put nice seat on it, would remove any quick release stuff as well, replace with good old fashioned nuts locking ones never hurt, and odd sizes good plan 14 on one side and 15 on other even better going imperial stay away from 1/2 though as 13mm will work nicely.
fit mudguards and reflective tape as well, will detract from any kerbside sex appeal and will make it more practical for you
keep general functions ok avoid latest shimano sti or sis is enough good old clunkers should have mud permanatly sprayed up over it, enough to deter looks but not get off on your work clothes, anything by raleigh is good start or for a new option halfords apollo for £100 perfect for not worrying about and half decent kit without any worries on failing for first year.
this would work out as cheap as good quality lock that could be beaten by all methods above.

Nothing to do with security, but there's someone who leaves their bike at the station next to my office, and they have a triange of paper taped into the frame with "Climate Change Action Now!" written on it in marker pen. What a twonk!
Have you challenged about his CO2 emissions when pedalling hard?

I have a mountain bike (probably worth around £230)
That will be "I had a mountain bike" if you leave it at the station. Go to the local tip and get a perfectly good non-mountain bike for <£5. (It might need new tyres, but they're not expensive.) Also get a pump and a spare set of tyre valves which you carry with you so you're not left immobilised if someone takes the valves out during the day.
If you get one with a quick-release lever on the saddle retaining nut, you can also get a second saddle, which you leave on the bike during the day in place of the normal one, having first embedded a bunch of those piezo thingies out of cigarette lighters in it
