Not sure if this is of any use to anyone, but screwfix have a small generator, 720w 2 stroke thing I think, for £50, made by wolf I think, but might be enough for lights/fridge etc, and seems pretty cheap. We always take a genny down with us, as it does enhance the camping experience.

Seems pretty good value, except note the noise levels are measured 7 metres away! Of course we have no idea what the noise level would be at the more standard distances...

...good value, and quite compact though.

These sound a bargin but at 720w it will be on its limit for a fridge (especially if its as hot as it was last year) and not much else i.e. TV. These cheap units are quite noisy and you should expect reasonable requests from other campers to turn it off at night - making it work harder through the day! It will also be a 2 stroke so dont forget the oil to mix with the petrol and the increased fumes.
Bearing this in mind I hired a 2kw silent runing Honda 4stroke last year from my local Hire shop (Rapid Hire in Wokingham) for £40 for the week, even that struggled in ther heat on the sunday (it was 42d!) and had to be left to cool for a bit after it cut out.

The thing to watch with fridges is that they kick in a bit quick and can take the gennie by surprise if its just ticking over....

"Please excuse mr Mr Panoz but would you mind limiting your car's noise between 1am and 7am as I'd like to get a little shut eye..."

Cars are OK - someone running their gennie next to your tent for a week isn't really much fun.

Yep, totally agree, still it made me chuckle when I read it though

Bear in mind generators do get nicked.

A couple of times I've heard stories of an unmarked van trawling round the sites just before/during/after the finish with a pair of bolt cutters.

Also heard of someone with a cheapo / loud / smelly genny running some distance from the tent. At night on the second day the power went off, they assumed it'd run out of fuel, went to investigate... turns out someone had nicked it!

Don't know about that but it did make me think of Dennis from RSS's pit wagon. They noise tested it at Combe last year...
