Is it worth fitting a oil cooler as i dont have overheating probs but is oil getting too hot?. No point if its only on trackdays but as i will be doing euro trips this year thinking of gauge stat remote filter and rad (size 15row 235mm) as sump is comming off for gasket change anyway.ps what size is the socket for the sumppan think it is imp?

I have a cooler on my Griff, but mine does have a tuned 5.5 engine!,if you want to know how hot your oil is getting, give Matt @ Thinkautomotive a call (02085681172)he does a small stick on strip for your oil filter that will record the highest temp reached.
If you do need a cooler you will need a sandwich plate that means you will have to fit a smaller in lengh oil filter,When I get a chance I'am sorting out the correct hose's so that you can plumb the hose's straight into the cover but you have to have a built in diverter to make the oil flow round the cooler as Land Rover use in their hose's this will alow you to use standard filters.

I got a kit from Earl's in Silverstone for mine with nice aeroquipped hoses, mounted in front of the water rad . Still uses the std oil filter.

Griffdude on the newer serp engines the front cover is different than the precats type the actual filter points forward towards the crossmember,on your engine I presume you used your old front cover when you upgraded to a 4.6 it points out to the side and is very easy to plumb up as you can get a new plate that you can use to add a cooler or even mount a remote filter.(sorry I seem to be a bit of an anorac but my old school mate runs Thinkautomotive and I spent a month rewiring his factory-I was like a kid in a sweetshop!,needless to say decking out my Griff in lots of shiny aeroquip hose was part of the deal!).

I use a 19 row version on my 4.3 Griffith. After fitting a VDO oiltemp gauge and sender I discovered that the temps can reach 135 celcius when you race up a mountainpass in the summer.

Without the oilcooler temps go as high as 150 celsius, this is in the summer (30 celsius) making the engine work hard racing up a mountainpass. I use Castrol RS 10W60 fully synthetic so it can take the heat no problem. I like the fact that with an oilcooler the oiltemp goes down realy quickly.

I would say for spirited driving and trackdays it's a must have item.

***NOT A DELIBERATE PLUG***,but i have aquired some cerbera oil pressure and water temp gauges, which i've been selling in the classifieds.Could these be used to replace the pressure gauge in the griff,so that you have oil pressure and oil temperature? They are capillary type,so if anyone knows how you could install this i'd be gratefull.Might just keep one back as they match perfectly.
