I'm just about to start making a little video of the car, and got to thinking about the different background tracks I want.

Is it possible, (is there any available software), to remove the singing from atrack when you only have the CD, not all the channels? (Does that make sense? I want the music from a particular track and not the vocals)

Martin.

Almost impossible. (But possible with very expensive equipment). Much easier to write and record a backing track yourself... or nick the original tape a re-mix it, or pay somebody in England, probably in the Lake District, a huge amount of money to write something for you.

edited to add: Can you not just choose the bits where the singer has their mouth shut? (always the best state for singers in my opinion).

OK, there is a way that you can do this but it will only work if the vocals of the track are dead centre in the mix and there will be artifacts.
Can you split a track into two sepearate mono tracks? L+R. If you can do this and you have a basic set of audio tools that include phase inversion you can sometimes get the job done. Getting hassle to go just now so will continue later.
sorry but the GF wins this time.

Being deadly serious here! (believe it or not) Have you looked to see if its available on any kareoke compilations?

Or, you could just pick another Hendrix track.

Greg.

PS. Hurry up with the video!!

Finding an instrumental version may be your best bet...

By artifacts I'm sure you mean the HUGE dollops of reverb that every singer demands which is spread right across the mix ...

[soapbox] I'll tell you a story about singers: I needed some vocals a while back for a few notes of humming (no really). Phoned up a mildly sucessful session singer (no names) who I knew could read (most can't) and offered her £600 for 10 mins recording in a studio. "Darling, I don't get out of bed for £600". The next day I used (arguably) the best session sax player in Britain (Snake), who played (like a God) on half a dozen tracks for the same money. I tell you, singers are going to be first up against the wall when the revolution comes [/soapbox]

...and breath.

Jeez...I'm just at the "scribbling down ideas" stage, Greg.

This is gonna take months...believe me! It wont be very long but I want it to somewhere near good.

Martin.

Right, have returned from duties (no not good ones).

as mr Carter has pointed out most modern recordings have stereo reverb, or they willl have backing vox etc spread around. This stuff can be dealt with but it is never perfect and it is not always an easy job. you generally end up with a phasey squishy sound at the top end.
what is the track you are after? It may well have a karaoke version or a radio accappela mix etc. If need be I could do a MIDI file version for you if the track is either simple or available.

I'm pretty sure (I'd bet my wedding tackle on it ) that there isn't a karaoke version, and I don't want to spill the beans publicly coz that'd spoil the end result (You lucky people will get the world premiere) I'm sure I'll get around it...thanks guys.

Go into Napster and enter the track search term "Instrumental". You would be surprised how many instrumentals that they actually have.

Could also write to the record company, tell them you are from a young media company and you are looking to use the track for a promo. You'll be amazed how many people actaully get back to you.
Plus you'll end up getting a few bonus cd's in the post...

Not that I've done this at all
