Anyone point me in the direction of a decent, clear, easy to understand tutorial on object oriented programming, including encapsulation and inheritance? Preferably one that's language independent. TIA.

I'd suggest easy to understand and OO are a bit of a contradiction in terms, certaintly in tutorial terms.

The wikipedia entry on OO is quite comprehensive as a first port of call, if you then google for OMG there should be some links off there.

I dunno - the concepts I think are pretty easy to get to grips with; its the nit-picking detail of each implementation that grates.

Whether or not the concepts are simple depends on whether or not they require a paradigm shift in your mind before you can understand them.

At the most superficial level the concepts probably are fairly simple, but their application to design and programming is less intuitive, I feel.

True and I always found the 'cup is a receptacle, is a handle' concept a good way of illustrating inheritance (well the use of the is a verb specifically) but the beauty of the concept is often lost when a writer tries to explain the nuances, as you suggest.

I see your paradigm shift and raise you polymorphism.

I found it very hard to learn OO in theory. The best way for me was to write some simple classes and see inheritance and encapsulation in action. The O'Reilly book, Programming c# is excellent, although it'll blow your non-language specific requirement out the window!
