Buying a 996 Carrera 2?

I'm new here.
I have an Alfa GTV.
Its an expensive bugger to run.
I want to sell it and buy a 98-99 911 996 Carrera 2.
Please could one of you kind and worldly people point me to useful buyers guide type resources.
Google has failed me.
I also have a couple of questions:
I plan to do 7,000 miles pa, how much is this likely to cost maintenance wise?
Also over 15k miles and two years, how much am I likely to lose in depreciation (lets say I buy a car with 50k on the clock, so that makes 65k at the time of sale?).
I appreciate that this is a bit Mystic Meg, but I would appreciate all ideas/feedback.

i would never ever discourage someone from wanting to buy a 996. but its not a cost-effective move from an alfa GTV. running costs will almost certainly be higher, simply because of the price of consumables such as pads, discs and tyres, even if nothing else goes wrong (which it probably wont). buy it cos its a great, fun car and will give you more pride of ownership than pretty much any other car you can buy in the real world.
(except a 944/968 which is cheap as chips and bombproof)

Just wanted some more real world evidence in a two-way interactive way that Evo can't.
The Alfa has cost me well over 2k in 2 years (plus insurance) - it does 25mpg (its a 2.0 litre!), Tyres are over 100 a corner, the exhaust has gone, the suspension is made out of toilet rolls and the wipers get stuck when wet.....
I want the 911 to be more cost effective than the GTV....

996's prices are still dropping so be aware of this when you buy and try to get a good deal to off set the loss when you come to sell.
Contrary to what you might read on here the Porsche 996 is a reliable car and mine was nothing less than ballistic and 100% faultless from purchase to sale (a sad day). The idea that you'd buy one and something is likley to go wrong with it in a major fashion is just untrue,I’d have another in a shot without any worries about reliability.
A major service cost £500 at an indie, the car was good on juice and a pleasure to own and drive.

I also own a Vesuvius 996 - see my profile - it was the cover and feature car for Total911 issue 1.
It has been AWESOME and despite a couple of minor niggles (none of which have cost me a penny as OPC rectified them without quibble) it has been and continues to be bulletproof.
I advise in the strongest possible terms to get the Porsche warranty (either by buying from OPC or paying £200 for an inspection and then £725 for the warranty) and ENJOY IT!
