I've just swapped my work PC from a Dell Latitude D505 to a spangly new OptiPlex GX520. Said 520 has been sat here attached to a 14inch crappo monitor for a while until i blagged it. When i go and connect up my wonking great 21" Apple monitor to it... nothing. Nada, doesn't come out of sleep. Clicks as if it's trying to come out of sleep but orange light still on. 17" TFT, fine. Crappo monitors of various specs, fine. Just won't power up the only monitor i want it to. 21"er was working fine on my D505 an hour ago.
I've updated graphics drivers, the bios, windows update et al.

Any ideas, or is it a shagged grapics card?

Only thing I can suggest is to set your PC to the lowest resolution, and lowest refresh rate and try from there...

Tried that. It worked once in safe mode, but now doesn't even come on in the bios. Clicks but doesn't switch on. Just tried different power but still the same.

Nope, monitor works on other things still. Other things all work on the PC. Just the combination of PC and monitor that don't.

Dell Diagnostics have picked up that one of the sticks of ram is, well, shagged. So i'm about to take that out and see if it makes any difference.

Just tried it on an identical GX520 and that doesn't work either. So it's fairly safe to conclude it's Dell's shite hardware.

Have you considered that it may be Intel's shite hardware? The PC does use Intel on board graphics.

Have you asked Dell support? Does your company have a maintenance agreement with Dell?

It does use an intel card. However, by the fact that it arrived in a dell PC from dell, to my mind that makes it Dell's shite hardware.

I need to call india today anyway as one of the memory sticks is faulty in this machine too, so i'll see if they've got any idea.

Could be a dead motherboard, capacitor failures are VERY common now on most old(ish) PC motherboards. The symptoms fit what you describe.

Have you tried using another graphics card ?

I would assume a dead MB too, if it hadn't done the same on another one.

I would swap a GFX card in, but it's onboard and i've not got any PCI cards.
