Am looking at different TT options.. X50 tiptronic, X50 manual or standard TTs then modding.

I know the turbos are bigger and gearbox mod on manual, but what else is different?
Also is the tiptronic gearbox on an X50 standard or is it upgraded?

Cheers
Rob

Gt2/X50 clutch about £50 more than a standard clutch.

Although Tiptronic is appealing for the easy drive, it is the limiting factor in modding the car.
A typical 996TT X50 with a Weltmeister ECU programme, Our own sports exhaust and a panel filter will deliver around 540 BHP & 590 Lb-ft as a minimum. On good fuel of course.
You cannot achieve anywhere near these numbers on a "girltronic"

Glenn - You are correct. The X50 has different intercoolers. They can be identified by touching them through the slots of the rear bumper just behind the rear wheels, if it is a X50 they will feel rough. Normal TT intercoolers feel smooth.

I would not advise doing this to a car that is hot however.

Hi, having just bought a manual X50 I know I searched all the forums and the consensus was that it had GT2 turbos and intercoolers, a strengthened gearbox, a different ecu and a different exhaust. Quite how different they are I'm sure someone like weltmeister will tell you. There seemed to be a consensus that the X50 was a better starting point if you are likely to want to mod it further.
I personally went for it incase I wanted to do this and in the small hope it may hold its value slightly better than a base tt. I also considered it a cheap Turbo S without the worry of the ceramic brakes.

For me.. if a car is not a track car, then it's a cruiser.. therefore might as well have the "cruiser gearbox"

What could I achieve with a standard TT and tiptronic, power wise.?

Glenn,

My wife will be driving the car, and she hates the "tiptronic box".. she is strongly urging me to get a real man's manual.. and has been questioning me about whether I have been seeing another man !!

I love the tippy box, and feel very secure driving the car.

I hope this does not spoil my relationship with you !! ??

It is a noisy version, not suited to creeping around in that posh neighbourhood you live in. On full boost it sounds like a P51 Mustang in a dive !

Allan.........I like noise, I've got four kids.

I ended up with a Tubi and under acceleration it sounds like one of those Mustang thingies too.

We fitted a Tubi last week to a std 996TT, great noise & with a free flow panel filter it gave an extra 25 BHP on our dyno. It sounded ace on full welly.

We then carried out an ECU reprogramme, voila 505 BHP & 545 Lb-ft

On a remap like this, what sort of changes are typical on the ignition map?

do you reakon that the X50 will suffer from more turbo lag than a normal turbo as they are larger units?

Turboguru, Porsche shows a power graph where you can see the power comes slightly later and harder on an X50, so I guess this means a bit more lag as well...

Allan how much are these ECU remaps your taking about? Who does the software for you?

(To everyone else)

This one of those things where there is no problem saying who's the supplier, actually makes the buyer feel even more confident since there are names in the industry like RS tuning who does the 996 Turbo software for many other companies after spending hundreds of hours developing this software and with one of the best results in the industry. Then there are names which are not as well rated (which I'm not stating for obvious reasons) and these are the people you should walk away from due to poor programming, CEL lights coming on and so on... Just for curiosity the software fitted to our Turbos has 2700 different maps (yes, two thousand and...) for engine management and auxiliaries...

We are using Revo www.revotechnik.com for the 2001 onwards Porsche cars. It goes in through the cars OBD port.
Pricing is on their site for the various models.

Revo were at our facilty today running a few variations of their GT3 Mk2 programme.....excellent

Allan, you're getting technical now........are you talking air filters here.

I'm still saving up for one of your mapping programs but rest assured I'll be heading in your direction.
