Clutch query

Hi Gents (and ladys if there are any),

Getting a bit twitchy at the moment with the clutch situation. Some days it will be fine, other days it will slip in 4th and 5th...........at the moment I am putting this down to it not being run properly for a couple of years.

Rust on the fly wheel possibly? I rwally don't know. However, if it is on its way out will it be detremental to run the fella until I can afford to sort it?

mine is the same, came all the way from oxford back to hinckley and it only startd to slip on the last couple of miles, other times it will do it in a few miles. i am just getting ready to remove engine and gear box to sort it out.
if you keep on driving it you could damage the flywheel.

Could be rust/ crap on the input shaft splines...

Where the clutch slave cylinder bulge is in the bellhouing there is a small drain hole. Have you noticed any oil dripping out? If so could be the rear seal on the engine. If it gets onto the clutch surfaces that could cause problems. To fix this first clean the engine breathers and flame traps.

Other than that the other thing to try is to change your driving style w.r.t. gearchanges, try going through the gears more often and giving it large in first, that might rub off any crud or glazing on the clutch.

Thanks so much lads, particularly Adam! I'll give it a whirl, don't really fancy having to have the engine out! It's a weird one really, it's intermittent so I'm hoping that there are other options for repair!

If it only slips in the beginning (during or just after releasing the clutch). It can be the normal clutch engagement. The standard clutch is known to be 'slow' to be from released to full engaged and can feel like slipping (mine does). If it is occuring while you are in the gear for some time:
- Clutch smeared with something as mentioned before
- Pressure plate (the 'fingers') worn and not able to provide enough pressure
- Clutch worn.
