Travan IDE tape unit in linux - help?

Having a spot of bother here - the drive is picked up in the BIOS no probs and poking around in /proc/ide/hdb would seem to indicate that linux sees it and knows what it is also. The info in /proc/ide/hdb would indicate that it should be accessible through /dev/ht0, BUT there is no /dev/ht0 or a /dev/hdb either for that matter so I can't access the thing.

The distro is Ubuntu 5.1.

Am I being amazingly dumb here or what? Either way I'd welcome any suggestions
