Hi,

I want to buy an ECU fault code reader for my Chimaera. I know it's the Range-Rover Lucas 14CUX and Rover make them but I can't get any sense from various garages/dealers. Most of them give you the old "ooooooooh no mate - that'll cost you thousands" bull.

So. Anyone know where I can buy a cheap fault code reader for my TVR?

Cheers,

Richard Fisher

The Rover unit is about £4500 and only available to Friends of Rover. There is a Range Rover fault code reader for around £100 but and this is a big but, it is not sophisticated and only reads out ECU faults that it recognises and the ECU detects. It doesn't do any diagnostics and many faults are not reported. To be honest, not really worth the money. It is easier to get the car checked with a professional bit of kit.

All depends on what you want it for.

Try OBD-2.com. I have one of these and use it on Range Rover. In theory it should pick up all OBD-2 standard codes but it does seem to be a bit hit and miss. e.g. it picked up a Lamda sensor high voltage fault but completely ignored the fact that I had just disconnected the sensor ! It also ignores open circuit temp sensors, injectors etc.
As Steve says, limited value......

What sort of plug does the OBD-2 reader have? The TVR has a standard Rover 5-pin (white) and a 16-pin (blue)? I thought that most of the 14CUX units used OBD-1 protocol. My Chimaera is a 1999 with the ECU dated as 4-98.

16 pin although only 4 are used. The socket in my Range Rover is grey. The plug which connects to the laptop is red ( there are different plugs, probably just pin configuration, for US, GM and European/Japanese cars)

Anybody know what the interface on the Cerbera is and are there any readers available ?
